Advising organic businesses in organic compliance to prevent organic fraud and ensure supply chain integrity.

About us

Strengthening Organic Systems (SOS) was founded in 2023 to improve the resilience and overall integrity of global organic supply chains. The focus of SOS is to support the implementation of the Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) Rule, the single largest update to the U.S. organic regulations since it was implemented in 2002. The SOE rule closes gaps in the current regulations and builds consistent certification practices to detect and prevent fraud, improve the transparency and traceability of organic products across the supply chain, and protect organic integrity to support the continued growth of the organic market.

SOS recently sponsored the Organic Trade Association regulatory webinar, "The NOP Enforcement in the SOE Era: The Power of Data," featuring Dr. Jenny Tucker from USDA's National Organic Program. The webinar provided valuable insights into the progress of implementing the Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) rule. Check out the #OTA link to a full report. Key updates from the webinar that are keeping the SOS team busy include: - 1,421 U.S. handling operations newly certified organic between January 1 and June 15, 2024, marking a 3x increase from 2023 during the same period. - Globally, 2,709 new handling operations have been certified organic since January 1, 2024, with a focus on exporters who were previously exempt from certification. - 49,712 import certificates issued since March 19, offering unprecedented visibility to imports entering the United States. - 837 warning letters sent to uncertified importers, stressing the necessity of certification. -September 19, 2024 is a date that importers of organic products need to know about.....keep reading.... Effective September 19, 2024, generating NOP import certificates without a USDA certified importer listed in the USDA Organic Integrity Database will not be possible. Currently, the exporter’s certifier may issue NOP Import Certificates linked to uncertified importers. This will no longer be permitted after September 19. After this date, organic imports must have an NOP Import Certificate or will be rejected upon shipment filing in ACE (CBP system). Please reach out to SOS for assistance. We are here to ensure compliance with SOE and provide businesses with sound advise and training on organic fraud prevention strategies. #StrengtheningOrganicSystems #OrganicIntegrity #ImportCertificates #FraudPrevention #SOE #SOS

The Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) rule, first published in January 2023 and implemented on March 19, 2024, is the single largest update to USDA organic regulations since the creation of the USDA National Organic Program (Agricultural Marketing Service) and has been a sea change for the organic sector. To keep our members informed on this critical rule, we recently held a webinar, NOP Enforcement in the SOE Era: The Power of Data, in which Dr. Jennifer (Jenny) Tucker, Deputy Administrator for USDA’s National Organic Program, provided an in-depth overview of how implementation of SOE is progressing. Read our full recap and find highlights of the data shared by Dr. Tucker here: https://bit.ly/3xGQw6U

  • There are many opportunities to understand your food supply- and unfortunately news doesn't always get it all right. Let's explore why processed certified organic products really ARE worth the money.

🌿 Opportunity to Correct Organic Misunderstandings 🌿 There's a real chance here to help both the media and consumers better understand what organic truly means. A recent article by US News misses some critical aspects of organic production and falls short of providing adequate consumer insight into their choices. 📰❌ I wish they'd checked with USDA National Organic Program (Agricultural Marketing Service) or Strengthening Organic Systems, LLC before they published this. While it's true that certified organic animal products offer superior assurances of animal welfare and stringent controls over living conditions and feed, and that organically grown crops are produced on land without prohibited synthetic or natural materials (requiring a 3-year transition period), the article leaves out crucial information about processed certified organic products. Let’s clear things up: ➡ 100% Organic: Products in this category must be produced without any added materials and contain only 100% organic ingredients. Even a processing aid can disqualify a product from being labeled 100% organic. 🌾🛡️ ➡ Organic (95% Organic): These products contain at least 95% organic agricultural ingredients. The remaining 5% can include only materials allowed on the National List under the USDA National Organic Program. Often, these products exceed 95% organic content, and all ingredients and processing aids undergo rigorous review. Nonorganic products cannot claim such careful vetting against a national standard. 🥗✅ ➡ Made with Organic (70% Organic): These products must contain a minimum of 70% organic ingredients. The leftover 30% must comply with the National List or the formulation requirements for this labeling category. 🍪 Overall, organic products provide greater clarity about food contents, restrict nonorganic ingredients and additives, and offer consumers assurances through certification under the federally enforced USDA National Organic Program (Agricultural Marketing Service). 🌿🔍 While the US News article is a start, it lacks comprehensive research into what organic certification entails. Consumers deserve to know the full scope of organic benefits, beyond just cost considerations. Trust me, you'd be surprised to know what's allowed in canned and processed food. It's worth noting that under the USDA Seal, someone is carefully reviewing and approving contents and through compliance and enforcement, operations who fail to meet requirements are penalized. 🔗 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gJqRxpgy #OrganicFood #ConsumerAwareness #USDAOrganic #FoodIntegrity #OrganicStandards #CertifiedOrganic #Health #Sustainability

Are you curious about the composition of capsules in organic supplements? They play a crucial role in product formulation and must adhere to the USDA organic regulations. Encapsulated herbal supplements bearing the USDA organic seal require the capsules to also be certified organic in order for the final encapsulated product to meet 95% organic threshold. Excitingly, the recent introduction of organic pullulan vegetarian capsules, the sole organic option available, is reshaping the landscape. At least we hope! There are some headwinds to contend with. What factors will influence the future of organic capsules? Will it be consumer demand, supply chain dynamics, regulatory policies, certification obstacles, or a blend of these elements? Now is an opportune moment to delve deeper, engage, and contribute to this evolving narrative. • 🔍 Important Lawsuits to Follow: PFAS Regulation 🔍 PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are largely unregulated and prevalent in many household products. These persistent chemicals find their way into our sewer systems, and a proposed eco-solution has been to convert sewage waste (aka sewage sludge) into fertilizer for land application. 🌍🚜 In a critical move towards environmental safety, Maine and Texas farmers are suing the EPA to regulate PFAS in sludge. This lawsuit(s) are not just about agriculture – it’s about the health of our ecosystems and our communities. 🌿⚖️ It's crucial to note that sewage sludge is prohibited in #organic production. HOWEVER, these forever chemicals can leech into the ground, become incorporated into food, and contaminate our water supply. Everyone is impacted when these materials are applied to farmland. 💧🥬 As we follow this important lawsuit, it’s a reminder of the interconnectedness of our food systems. Stay informed and support initiatives that protect our planet and food integrity. 🌱💪 #PFAS #EnvironmentalSafety #ForeverChemicals #OrganicProduction #EPARegulation #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSafety #WaterContamination #EcoSolutions #OrganicIntegrity https://lnkd.in/gq2UJeBb https://lnkd.in/gayA-rbt

  • 🌱🐔 Pasture Raised or Free Range – Do You Know What These Label Claims Mean? 🐮 🌱 Understanding label claims such as "Pasture Raised" and "Free Range" can be confusing. However, important steps are being taken to clarify these terms. Perdue Farms has petitioned the USDA FSIS to define these claims more precisely for Meat and Poultry. But did you know that USDA National Organic Program (Agricultural Marketing Service) already sets high standards for pasture access and feeding requirements for livestock and poultry? With the upcoming implementation of the Organic Livestock and Poultry Standard (OLPS) in January 2025, organic production will solidify itself as the gold standard, ensuring consumers receive clarity, third-party verification, and robust federal regulatory oversight for these claims. 🥇✅ We're thrilled to see that the Organic Trade Association (OTA) has emphasized the significance of incorporating organic standards when forming definitions for "Free Range" and "Pasture Raised" labels on meat and poultry. This adds to the transparency and trust consumers can have in their food labels- and ensures that USDA programs recognize the internal framework already established to support clarity in claims. 🌾🔍 Curious about organic compliance and how to ensure your operations meet these rigorous standards? Strengthening Organic Systems, LLC offers tailored solutions to help businesses navigate this landscape smoothly and efficiently. From comprehensive compliance support to strategic training programs, we have the expertise to elevate your organic certification process. 🌟📋 Read more about the Perdue petition and OTA’s comments here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gHWp-HcS #KnowWhatYouAreBuying #OrganicStandards #FreeRange #PastureRaised #OrganicCertification #ComplianceExcellence #StrengtheningOrganicSystems #TransparencyInFood #USDAOrganic #OTASupport
