This past week, we headed to Jobs for the Future (JFF)’s, #JFFHorizons, where we had a chance to connect and collaborate with leaders in the higher education and workforce development spaces. We had insightful conversations, including: 💻 How #ArtificialIntelligence is affecting one’s early career. 🎓 A look at the State Opportunity Index, and the connection between education and opportunity through five key areas.

Learners, job seekers, employers, education and training providers, and policymakers need access to trusted data on education-to-employment (E2E) outcomes to make well-informed decisions. A strong E2E data system can’t exist without information on key employment characteristics, such as occupation, pay rate, and job location. However, too often, employment and wage records data are inaccessible for E2E analyses, and when they are accessible, these records often lack fields that are critical for assessing career pathways and outcomes. Our recent analysis of state wage record systems for the State Opportunity Index reveals meaningful state momentum for improvement. Our assessment revealed that 10 states are collecting data on occupation along with either pay rate or work location. Another 21 states are collecting at least one of these three elements, while another 6 have plans to start collections. With more than two-thirds of states engaged in efforts to enhance wage records, our nation has a strong foundation to build fundamentally better wage systems that illuminate how learners transition from education to employment. Strada Education Foundation will be working alongside a number of partners, including the state-led PSEO Coalition, the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation JEDx Project, and others to support and accelerate state progress on enhanced wage records and other data system improvements. Review our analysis of enhanced wage records in the State Opportunity Index full report and the Clear Outcomes appendices for Element 2: https://lnkd.in/gbrFiu8f. I'm thankful for colleagues and partners like Holly Ann Custard, Ph.D., Heather McKay, Andrew Hanson, David Troutman, Adam Leonard, Matthew Gee, Jason Tyszko, and many others in this work.

A crucial element in strengthening the link between education to opportunity is data and how students, educators, and employers access these data systems. 📈 Data systems can help inform the decision-making process for students and the institutions and educators that serve them. 🤝 Employers also benefit from more comprehensive data systems as they manage talent needs and build partnerships with education and training providers. Read more from Jonathan Furr, Senior Vice President and Chief Data Ecosystem Officer, on how states are working together to accelerate their progress toward a more holistic education-to-employment #DataSystem: https://hubs.la/Q02Hw9tb0

Had a great time joining my Strada Education Foundation colleagues Craig Robinson and Melissa Leavitt to talk #studentsuccess and education-to-career guidance with student affairs and academic affairs leaders from American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) institutions today. The commitment to ensuring that students are prepared for life after graduation is clear!

Coaching that addresses academic progress and career preparation together can be a powerful tool for students to bridge their college education to their #career aspirations. Our own Craig Robinson, Kimberly Sluis, and Melissa Leavitt recently hosted a roundtable discussion during the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), 2024 Summer Meeting for Academic and Student Affairs Leaders in Denver, CO to dig deeper into this very topic.
