Storlytics is a powerful software for modeling battery energy storage systems. It allows users to design, size and optimize grid tied battery systems by offering a user friendly interface to deduce power and energy capacity requirements for different energy storage grid applications "use-cases". It also allows users to accurately model power flow, battery losses, round trip efficiency and predict degradation curves of defined energy storage systems leveraging a wide variety of inverter and battery models, including Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistries. Storlytics can import user defined and benchmark ESS profiles to deduce actual performance of planned grid tied and renewable energy projects.

As the energy storage sector experiences unprecedented growth, managing battery degradation has become a critical challenge. A recent article (https://lnkd.in/eng4bcCn) suggests that there is a lot to consider in managing BESS facilities: 1. **Understanding Battery Degradation**: - All battery-based energy storage systems degrade over time, resulting in a loss of capacity. - Proactive planning for this degradation is critical to maximize potential revenues and ensure the role of energy storage as a key enabler of grid stability and the energy transition. 2. **Impact of Temperature**: - Both high and low temperatures can significantly affect battery degradation rates. 3. **Strategies for Managing Degradation**: - **Oversizing**: Installing more battery capacity upfront than needed, to offset expected degradation losses over the years. - **Augmentation**: Adding capacity periodically throughout the project’s lifetime to maintain contracted capacity. 4. **Benefits of Oversizing**: - Avoids the need for additional site mobilization, permits, and labor down the line. - Locks in capital expenditures at the project outset, mitigating future cost uncertainty. 5. **Augmentation Strategies**: - Requires extra physical space and adequate electrical configuration planned from the start. - Becoming more attractive due to falling costs of lithium-ion batteries, despite potentially missing out on future cost reductions. 6. **Types of Augmentation**: - **AC Augmentation**: Involves adding new infrastructure like inverters and Power Conversion Systems (PCS) to enhance interaction with the electrical grids. - **DC Shuffling**: Focuses on optimizing the internal distribution of energy within battery stacks to prolong lifespan and efficiency. 7. **Regulatory and Technical Considerations**: - AC augmentation requires permitting and regulatory approval, which can be time-consuming and complex. - DC shuffling offers technical advantages and typically lower costs since it reuses existing infrastructure and avoids extensive regulatory hurdles. 8. **Impact of BESS usage profile** - Optimal charging and discharging intervals often conflict with arbitrage opportunities, complicating degradation management.
