Kudos to Environmental Leadership Award winner Drake's Brewing Co. in City of San Leandro! The company has made an impactful investment in reusable pallets, pallet wrap, and rubber bands for their transportation operations around the brewery, each year eliminating 16,000 pounds of wood pallet waste and 290,000 square feet of disposable plastic wrap—enough to cover 5 football fields. The Food Waste Reduction Team at StopWaste is grateful to Berkeley Food Network—a thought partner and leader in the Alameda County food recovery sector—for allowing us to conduct an audit of their waste stream. Through this activity, we sought to gain a deeper understanding of the true cost of food recovery to organizations like theirs, who pay for the disposal costs of food packaging and donated food that is not suitable for redistribution. 🌍Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year. Food waste contributes to more than half of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Meanwhile, too many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. 🌍BFN is the largest Food Recovery Organization (FRO) in Northern Alameda County, each year diverting hundreds of tons of edible, surplus food to neighbors in need while saving the equivalent of 80 years of electricity consumption for one household! 🌍Food recovery is an important initiative that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. However, the costs associated with sorting and waste hauling the unusable donations can be unsustainable for FROs, often lean nonprofits. 🌍In an effort to change that, we recently partnered with StopWaste and Cascadia Consulting Group to analyze the compost and waste at BFN. Follow the link below to see how this unique compost audit project could yield more support for food recovery efforts in our community. https://ow.ly/nyKY50RkhtU #earthday #foodrecovery

We’re proud to be part of the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment, and we’re happy to share the incredible work of our region’s #GroceryRetail signatories. Since 2019, #retailers have reduced the tons of unsold food in their stores in the region by 25%. This indicates an estimated 30% decrease in #GreenhouseGas emissions associated with unsold food across the #PacificCoast. To learn more about this work, read here: https://lnkd.in/g3UHG44h
