StoneTurn’s cybersecurity experts weigh in on recent global technology outages, and what they can signal to organizations about appropriately managing #risk for their businesses. Read more in the post below. #cybersecurity #cyberrisk #riskmanagement #bigtech
Last week, the New York Times posted an interesting article analyzing the consequences of relying upon Big Technology companies in the wake of the CrowdStrike and Microsoft issue. Martin N. and I had an interesting conversation about it and I thought I would share some of our takeaways. https://lnkd.in/e2ZZ6p3C The NY Times raises a lot of interesting points about the current state of our interconnected world, and what the impact could possibly be. The global dependency on Big Technology corporations is a complex reality. There is no doubt that sole reliance upon Big Tech creates a “highly digitized, highly interdependent, highly connected, and highly vulnerable” society, as the NYT article notes. However, risk is innate to all decisions organizations make. Opting for a Big Tech free or Big Tech light technology stack comes with its own consequences. We rely on these providers for one major reason: they are the best at what they do and are reliable. When our team provides recommendations to clients to implement security tools, we almost always recommend industry leaders. Big Tech corporations have access to a broad range of intelligence to assess current threats and constantly innovate to address emerging risks. Smaller or more independent providers sometimes can’t patch vulnerabilities as quickly or don’t have the support capabilities required by larger businesses. Further, highly diverse tech stacks sometimes lead to convoluted integrations between tools or a patchwork of solutions addressing control needs. This can increase the complexity of managing tools, leading to risks of misconfiguration or tools conflicting with one another. No matter what we choose, risk will follow. Big Technology providers must be aware of the responsibility they shoulder when the world relies on them and act accordingly. This necessitates increased scrutiny for monitoring and testing from providers themselves to catch potential issues early and adequately protect their vast user populations. Technology providers of all sizes should aspire to secure technology by design and collaborate with government partners to build a more secure future. Finally, it will also benefit end users and corporations alike to consider continuity options when big tech experiences service interruptions. https://lnkd.in/eC3gZvGf
