FYI to California businesses: The Governor of California has signed the Commercial Tenant Protection Act (Senate Bill 1103), authored by Senator Caroline Menjivar, into state law. Pulled from the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights' press release: The bill delivers first-in-the-nation commercial protections to safeguard the smallest businesses and nonprofits from displacement. The bill provides commonsense leasing standards that bring clarity and stability to both business owners and landlords alike. It also expands language access for commercial leases, reducing a critical barrier that has historically harmed immigrant entrepreneurs. The bill was co-sponsored by six organizations across California: Small Business Majority, Public Counsel, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, Inclusive Action for the City, CAMEO Network, and Bet Tzedek Legal Services. https://lnkd.in/dQ_fedyp

As more and more women enter the entrepreneurial ecosystem, it’s important to highlight their experience and reality. So, let’s talk about women in business by the numbers (Source: NAWBO National). 🇺🇸 99% of all U.S. businesses are small businesses; and of that, 43.2% are owned by women-owned. On top of that, women of color operate nearly HALF (49.8%) of all women-owned businesses. 🌴 States with the most women-owned businesses are Hawaii, Virginia, and Colorado. Are you from this state? 🏦 Even though women-owned businesses have grown by 21% in the past five years, their average loan size is 50% less than their male counterparts. In addition, only 2.4% of venture funding goes to women-owned firms. 💰 Because of the disproportionate amount of funding to women-owned firms, the “top priority for many women-owned businesses is to get more funding and financial help—especially since about 53% of these businesses are funded by personal savings.” 🐣 There’s also the real circumstance that some women are working two jobs — business owner and caretaker.  About 61% of women business owners said that school closures have impacted their businesses; and 30% reported scaling back due to childcare obligations.
