The Stanford PACS and Stanford Social Innovation Review team were thrilled to be part of the 2024 Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum, hosted in Hong Kong earlier this month by the Institute of Philanthropy and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Director of Philanthropy Research and Education Vera Michalchik moderated a session exploring whether outcome-based financial instruments are ready for wider adoption in the sector. SSIR Global Editions Editor Jenifer Morgan moderated a fireside chat on measuring impact, and participated in a panel discussion on how mass media and philanthropy can work together to engage diverse audiences, inspire action, and amplify social outcomes. A little essay on knowledge@emlyon about our research in Organization Studies on the 'upcycling' of existing organizational practices for new imperatives—like when San Francisco nonprofits repurposed their existing bureaucratic practices to address the challenge of opening up. "Repurposing is all around us, and we often hold it up high as evidence of the ingenuity of civic and business leaders. It means turning old warehouses into community centers like the former Halle Girondins or the Cité des Halles next to emlyon business school's new campus in Gerland Ville de Lyon or reviving crumbling ruins as temporary concert venues like the Nuits de Fourvière in the hallowed Théâtre Gallo Romain Métropole de Lyon. Repurposing is also a crucial idea in the age of the circular economy, but it leaves us with a big question. If we can turn recycled truck tarps into cool messenger bags like FREITAG and turn tossed groceries into candles and creams like Pulpe de Vie, how can we ‘upcycle’ the organizations we work in?" This article draws on Rawlsian political philosophy to investigate whether and how social enterprises can support social justice. We propose that this perspective assigns organizations a duty to foster institutional capacity, a concept we define and elaborate. We investigate how this duty might apply specifically to social enterprises, given their characteristic features. We theorize six different mechanisms through which social enterprises might successfully discharge this duty.
