At Standard Chartered, we constantly endeavour to be an organisation that advocates inclusion for all – not just employees, but also for our clients. On this International Day of Sign Languages, we would like to touch upon an aspect of inclusion that we have worked on over the years. In our effort to improve our offerings and value proposition for persons with disabilities, we launched our Sign Language Helpline in 2021. This made us the 1st MNC Bank in India to provide accessible Banking services in Sign Language via Video Banking for our hearing-impaired clients. The Sign Language Helpline was the brainchild of our employee, Nandhini C, who has been deaf since childhood. She always had a strong desire to learn and do more, but the lack of accessibility to even basic services, hindered her ability to do so. To make matters worse, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated her challenges as mask-wearing became mandatory, making communication even more difficult. Nandhini and her colleague came up with the idea of deaf-friendly Banking. After 18 months of consistent effort, research, cross-functional support from internal teams, Diversity & Inclusion Council and Sign Language training to a select group of employees, Nandhini leveraged our existing Video Banking capabilities to bring this idea to life. The Sign Language Helpline enables deaf customers to directly communicate with the Bank via video calls conducted in Sign Language. It empowers the deaf community to seek assistance, ask questions, and resolve Banking issues, thereby fostering their confidence and independence. We are proud to share that Standard Chartered Bank caters to over 200 calls in a year through this Helpline. We aim to continue building on this inclusive product proposition and become the Bank of Choice for the hearing impaired. #StandardChartered #DeafBanking #SignLanguageHelpline #SignLanguage #Inclusion
