A recent report from Harvard University demonstrates the staggering cost of housing in Texas and across the United States, making homeownership less and less attainable. More than half of renters in our state are cost-burdened, and housing costs and shortages have fueled a 12% increase in homelessness. When looking at this data, the need for affordable housing is clear. In the coming weeks, we’re launching a funding opportunity to support nonprofit organizations, local government, or collaboratives working to improve affordable housing for low- to moderate-income households in Central Texas through planning and/or predevelopment support. One of the goals outlined in our new strategic plan is to increase access to quality care designed to advance health equity. Access to timely, responsive care remains out of reach for many Central Texans, and cost remains a main barrier to care along with lack of culturally competent quality care across the region. In addition to supporting health services and infrastructure, we aim to expand the number of individuals covered by insurance, the medical and non-medical benefits covered by insurance, and the ability to access those benefits. Broadband access is essential to bringing communities together, keeping people connected and collaborating. The small community of McDade in Bastrop County will soon be getting broadband access at a reasonable cost, which will be a game changer for social connection, education, health access, and more. Last month, we recognized the achievements of our Neal Kocurek Scholars who recently graduated. In total, these graduates have earned 29 bachelor’s degrees, 8 master’s degrees, and 11 doctorate degrees. Of those graduating with bachelor’s degrees, 8 scholars will be continuing on to graduate and medical school programs.
