Exceptional Care for Life.

About us

Founded in 1906 by two local physicians, St. Mary’s became a Catholic hospital in 1938 operated by the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and later sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. Today, St. Mary’s Health Care System is a regional not-for-profit Catholic teaching healthcare system inclusive of three hospitals, St. Mary’s Medical Group, Graduate Medical Education, Home Health, Hospice Services, Senior Living, extensive outpatient services, auxiliary/volunteer services and clinical affiliations with the University of Georgia/Augusta University. A member of Trinity Health, the third largest non-for-profit health system in the U.S., our Mission is to serve in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities while our Vision is to become the national leader in improving the health of our communities and each person we serve, to be the most trusted health partner for life. St. Mary’s facilities include St. Mary’s Hospital (Athens), St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital (Greensboro), St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital (Lavonia), Georgia Neurological Surgery & Comprehensive Spine, Highland Hills Village, St. Mary’s Mercy Guest Cottage, St. Mary’s Outpatient & Wellness Center and St. Mary’s Infusion and Wound Care Center. Updates

  • We want to share our excitement with you: St. Mary’s Hospital has been named by U.S. News & World Report to its 2024-2025 Best Hospitals as a High Performing hospital for heart attack, stroke, hip replacement and knee replacement! This is the highest distinction a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings, and this is the second year in a row in which we've been recognized for care in these four areas. https://bit.ly/3yjxVOh

    • The image displays four award badges from U.S. News & World Report for St. Mary’s Hospital, which is identified as a member of Trinity Health. Each circular badge is overlaid on a dark blue and gray laurel design and includes the text "HIGH PERFORMING HOSPITALS" at the top and "2024-2025" at the bottom. These accolades are categorized individually for different medical services: "HEART ATTACK," "STROKE," "KNEE REPLACEMENT," and "HIP REPLACEMENT." Each category is distinctly highlighted in blue at the center of its respective badge.
  • Please join us in congratulating Rick Heaton, RN, on receiving St. Mary’s systemwide DAISY Award for nursing excellence. Rick provides care as part of the float pool at St. Mary’s Hospital, working in different units as needed. He was nominated by the loved one of an ICU patient who was greatly comforted by Rick as the patient neared the end of life. Congratulations, Rick – and thank you for the healing care you provide to our patients and their loved ones! Learn more at https://bit.ly/3Qk9k14.

  • Congratulations to Tracy Wilkes, a housekeeper with Environmental Services at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital, who has received our July Spirit of Mercy Award. Tracy is a kind, compassionate, down-to-earth person described by her colleagues as “sent from heaven.” She does her job with intense dedication and then does more. For example, on busy days, she will answer a call light so the patient gets immediate attention, and then relay their need to the nurses. A colleague noted, “Infection control is a high priority for her. I have no doubt she is one of the reasons we have a 0% post-op infection rate.” Congratulations, Tracy – and thank you!
