Nothing like a day in DC that brings some of the best work of our country together in one place! I was able to represent the Squadra Ventures team at the Innovative Capital Summit hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce This event was to celebrate the funding of new Tech Hub locations around the United States, all focusing on the acceleration of scientific fields, exporting innovation, and economic prosperity to areas outside of normal tech cities like San Francisco, New York City, and Boston. After hearing from many great speakers including Secretary, Gina Raimondo, Dr. Eric Schmidt, Ylli Bajraktari Christine Keung, Emily Knight, Jim Shelton, Damien Dwin, and Karen Kornbluh, the entire delegation headed to happy hour at the Capital! This was a great networking opportunity where the members of the Department of Commerce, the Tech Hub awardees, and a number of fascinating people from the investor community where able to share in conversation about the opportunity to invest in amazing startups while driving economic development across the nation. The event ended with Senator Chuck Schumer telling the group about the importance of the Chips and Science Act for our national security. He congratulated the newly funded organizations, and the Department of Commerce for their hard work. I couldn't agree more! I am incredibly excited to announce the release of the first edition of the NetRise Supply Chain Visibility & Risk Study Series. Given all the news recently around networking equipment being targeted by threat actors and the obvious ubiquitous nature of networking equipment, we felt this was the best device type to start with. Everyone does not have medical devices or OT/ICS devices, but fear not, those risk studies are coming in the next handful of months. Some of the device types in scope for this report are routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs and Wireless Access Points. The devices assessed here range from large corporations to small companies and everything in between. The goal of this risk study is to shine a light on the software supply chain security risks that exist in devices that are in use by everyone on the planet, but that are difficult to see as there are very limited sets of capabilities to highlight and address these issues. All issues identified are not the end of the world, but some of the results should raise some eyebrows. A few examples: 1️⃣ - 60% of the devices assessed are utilizing end-of-life linux kernels 2️⃣ - The vast majority of CVEs with weaponized exploits were High or Medium CVSS scores, NOT Critical. This highlights the reality that addressing CVEs based on CVSS score alone is quantitatively insufficient. 3️⃣ - 72% of the devices assessed had a CVE that was on the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) list. Upon the last check, ZERO of these devices have been reported to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) CDM dashboard for proper tracking. 4️⃣ - of the 112,026 CVEs identified across the 100 devices, 37.2% of them are at least 5 years old or older. None of these 112,026 vulnerabilities are currently correlated in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) NVD and are therefore categorized as an 'n-day'.
