About us
Spence-Chapin is a licensed and accredited nonprofit organization that has been offering quality adoption services for more than 100 years. Our mission is to provide adoption & permanency related services as well as mental and emotional health programs. Our mission is driven by the simple belief that every child deserves a family. Through our Modern Family Center we are helping each family member navigate their individual adoption stories with clarity and confidence. Spence-Chapin's roots can be traced to the early 1900s and the pioneering work of Clara Spence, and Dr. and Mrs. Henry Chapin. Today, Spence-Chapin is proud of our role as a prominent voice and leading advocate for adoption, and of our commitment to the well being of all members of the adoption triad: birth parents, adoptive parents, and their children.

Congratulations to Dan Mace, Beast Philanthropy, and the entire team on this fantastic achievement, and for sharing the story of Baphumelele Children's Home with the world. At Spence-Chapin, we are honored to run our Granny Program at Baphumelele, where we provide one-on-one care and support for the children. We would love to explore opportunities for future collaboration to continue to share the transformative impact we can all have on the lives of children around the world!
Feels so great that our most award winning film for Beast Philanthropy over the past year globally, is one we made locally in cape town. It' s one thing getting recognition for your work and a bonus when it's centred around giving back, but the fact it's homemade makes it so much more rewarding. well done to the JOE team for your endless dedication and to the Baphumelele Children's Home and Mama Rosi for letting us tell your story as well as the audience and donors for funding 12 new homes and a new playground for these kids.

Big news from Washington DC! Last spring, our friends at National Council For Adoption successfully got Congress to direct the Federal Trade Commission to review false advertising by unlicensed, for-profit online intermediaries, often referred to as "baby brokers," who seek to mislead take advantage of expectant parents considering adoption and hopeful adoptive parents. Last week, the FTC sent a letter to 31 of the worst offenders, warning them to change their practices or face legal consequences. This is a win for everyone in the adoption constellation. We 💙 you South Africa! Our recent trip was filled with interactive trainings, impactful conversations, and LOTS of hugs 🤗 Our Director of International Programs, Stefani, provided training to 200 childcare workers in two therapeutic models that are designed for children with trauma backgrounds, enabling them to better support kids in their care. We are so grateful to everyone we met and got to reconnect with on our trip!
