Helping our champions improve their health and wellness so they can perform their best in sports and in life is always our goal. To help accomplish this, we partnered with the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University to host our 2024 Fall MedFest event at the University's medical school in North Haven on October 24th. During the event, medical, physical therapy, and occupational therapy students volunteered their time to ensure that 23 of our athletes received the sports physicals they need to participate in Special Olympics' sports training and competitions. MedFest not only provided our athletes with an opportunity to receive a physical exam, it also offered the students an opportunity to receive hands-on training on how to treat individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Landon Mastroianni and Gavin Mangini, Special Olympics Unified Sports® teammates from Conard High School, had the awesome opportunity to be co-hosts on ESPN! They were selected to help announce the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools across the country that were named to the ESPN Honor Roll for 2024. Special Olympics state Programs selected high schools that offer Unified Sports and received national banner recognition by a National Certifying Board to be an Honor Roll designee. Landon and Gavin visited ESPN in Bristol where they enjoyed a tour of the studios and teamed up with ESPN studio hosts Christine Williamson and Victoria Arlen for two taping sessions. We're so proud of Landon and Gavin for meeting the challenge and doing an incredible job and can't wait to see the announcements which will begin “airing ” the second week of November on Special Olympics North America and ESPN Citizenship social platforms! Special thanks to Conard High School Unified Sports coach Tracie Kelly for making it happen for these two students leaders. And we thank ESPN for being a Global Presenting Sponsor of our Unified Sports program and a phenomenal champion of inclusion!" "Perfect weather greeted our harriers at the Washington Mall for the start of the Marine Corps Marathon 10k. The sun was just rising behind the Capitol as we arrived at the Special Olympics Virginia tent to get our bibs and start to warm up. The threesome of Brandon Licke, Anthony Shonti and Amanda Hallworth were running well, stride for stride as they approached the 6 mile mark. Justin Mazza was looking good as well as he prepared for his finishing kick up the steep incline to the finish. After some food and a warm down, the awards were announced with Justin Mazza taking a silver medal and Brandon Licke taking a bronze medal in their respective divisions of the Special Olympics OPEN competition. Anthony Shonti and Amanda Hallworth were crowned the champions of the Special Olympics Unified division and were presented a plaque at a special ceremony with the Marines Commander at the awards pavilion. This race was a wonderful conclusion to another successful SOCT Unified Long Distance Running Team season." - Head Coach Kevin Grimes Join us in congratulating Coach Kevin and all of SOCT's Unified long-distance runners on their outstanding season! #soct #marinecorpsmarathon #runners #ChooseToInclude
