Today, the Special Olympics Global Center for Inclusion in Education published research revealing that 64% of educators and 77% of parents of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) view AI as a potential tool to promote inclusion in the classroom and close educational gaps between students with and without disabilities. These results illuminate a clear role for Special Olympics to support educators in thinking ambitiously about how AI can benefit educators and those with IDD. But skepticism about AI rightly remains, with parents, educators and athletes alike reporting concerns about AI models not being trained on data provided by persons with IDD, meaning that their capabilities and contributions will not accurately be reflected in these technologies. Special Olympics is calling on technology companies and developers to reflect the needs and perspectives of our community in future AI products and platforms. A failure to listen to people with IDD will result in three percent of the population being locked out of the most revolutionary technology since the advent of the personal computer.
