Mission controllers at the Space Telescope Science Institute connect with #Webb at least 2-3 times per 24 hours. They work with planners as well as schedulers at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory & the DSN complexes to plan communications months in advance, since many other observatories also use the DSN. #NASA #JWST #NASAWebb

Expanding the frontiers of space astronomy. We help humanity explore the universe.
About us
We are the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. We help humanity explore the universe with advanced space telescopes and ever-growing data archives. Established in 1981, we have helped guide the most famous observatory in history, the Hubble Space Telescope. Since its launch in 1990, we have performed the science operations for Hubble. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which launched on December 25, 2021. We will perform parts of the science operations for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, in formulation for launch in late 2026, and we are partners on several other NASA missions. Our staff conducts world-class scientific research; our Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) curates and disseminates data from over 20 astronomical missions; and we bring science to the world through internationally recognized news, education, and public outreach programs. We value our diverse workforce and civility in the workplace, and seek to be an example for others to follow. OUR STRATEGIC GOALS • Excel in the science operations of NASA's current and future astrophysics flagship missions. • Advance state-of-the-art astronomical research, archives, and tools for scientific discovery. • Make the world's astronomical information accessible to all. • Promote an inclusive, equitable workplace and cultivate a diverse, engaged workforce.

Last week, the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) graciously hosted our 2024 SASP interns. They enjoyed an enlightening tour of the James M. Gilliss Library, the 6-inch Warner & Swasey Transit Circle, the 12-inch Clark/Saegmüller refractor, and the impressive 26-inch "Great Equatorial" telescope. The STScI team and SASP interns extend their sincere appreciation to @Brian Mason, Astronomer at the USNO, and Kimberly Rupley, Public Affairs Specialist at USNO, for facilitating these enriching tours.

The Space Telescope Science Institute uses the Deep Space Network, “the largest and most sensitive scientific telecommunications system in the world,” to communicate with Webb. Earlier this year, The Baltimore Banner was able to observe station keeping that changed the JWST’s acceleration by 22 centimeters per second. Forty-seven seconds later, the burn was over. Webb had moved. The graphic representation of the JWST showed a charming change — little digital thrusters displaying flames for as long as they were actually firing in space. “I look at this mission as a gift we’re giving humanity. We’re helping the scientific community understand who we are. Where we come from,” Whiteleather said. “We’re helping to understand our universe and our place in it.” To read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eHDbC2R9

Our 2024 SASP interns recently visited the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. During their visit, they explored the #Hubble Telescope Mission Operations Center (MOC) and viewed the 1/6th scale model of #HubbleSpaceTelescope, where the iconic picture of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman was taken. Additionally, they had the opportunity to tour the clean room where the #Roman Telescope is currently under construction. We extend our gratitude to Jim Jeletic, HST Deputy Project Manager; Amethyst Barnes, Roman Space Telescope Science Team Post-Baccalaureate Researcher; and Peter Sooy, Outreach Lead for Webb and Roman Space Telescopes, for hosting our SASP interns during this enlightening experience.
