Juneteenth celebrates the history and significance of the end of slavery in the United States, honoring the date approximately 250,000 slaves unaware the North had won the Civil War were told of their freedom. However, racism and prejudice still have an impact on access to care today. Past unethical medical treatment in the Tuskegee Experiment, when the United States Public Health Department deliberately withheld crucial treatment from Black men to study the unchecked effects of syphilis, led to many in the Black community still not trusting public health officials or various types of medical treatment.  It’s important for care providers to consider how the patient’s background and perceptions of healthcare can deter them from scheduling a routine appointment. Dr. Don Arnold II, endourologist and chief of surgery at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and SIH Herrin Hospital, wants patients to know SIH is committed to all aspects of their care. “Patients will receive the best healthcare possible,” says Dr. Arnold. “We do not treat people differently based upon race. Every person, regardless of their race and situation, should be treated with dignity and respect and without judgment. SIH has a widely diverse group of people working for the organization so patients can find someone they will be comfortable with.”  Read More: https://lnkd.in/gbYm8m3G

  • THANK YOU: Michael Motsinger and Marion Subaru stopped by the SIH Cancer Institute with blankets from Subaru Loves to Care and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This wonderful partnership keeps our patients comfortable by providing them with warm blankets to use during infusion treatments and then to take home. We love feeling the support of our community in caring for our patients, and we are proud to be recipients of this generous gift!

  • AWARD WINNER: We're in the middle of CNA/PCT week, so we thought it would be the perfect time to shout out Harrison Freeman. He's a PCT in the Med/Surg unit at SIH St. Joseph Memorial Hospital. Harrison recently got FIVE Toni Award nominations! "She shared that he was always right on top of things and checking on her frequently. Harrison took the time to slow down and chat. She said that she really felt heard and cared for." Great work, Harrison!
