  • It's looking good for D1 land protections in Alaska! The Bureau of Land Management released its final EIS with a 'no action' preferred alternative, which would maintain the current protections for 28 million acres of land across the state of Alaska that might have been opened up to harmful development. The Record of Decision is expected in late August. Lifting D1 protections would have significant impacts on wildlife, vegetation and, as many commenters noted, subsistence activities. The EIS states: "Comments received from local residents and subsistence users during the public comment period stressed the important spiritual, mental, and physical benefits of engaging in these subsistence activities and being on the land. Subsistence harvests of plant and animal resources provide nutrition and contribute to cultural, economic, and social wellbeing." • We’re excited to introduce Alex Pear (She/ They), our summer communications and outreach fellow. She came to Juneau in September as an Alaska Fellow supporting work on the Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy, and is eager to learn from the amazing team at SEACC and build her storytelling skills. This position is supported by Alaska Conservation Foundation s Ted Smith internship program. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (traditional territory of the Lenape), Alex “adopted” her first tree in kindergarten and thus began a devout love affair with the outdoor world where she’s always felt at ease. Since graduating from Williams College in 2022, she’s let this strong affection guide her and feels grateful to have found her way to Lingít Aaní, where she hopes to support ongoing regional storytelling work to uplift glimpses of the love, hope, community, awe, resiliency, and respect that abound in a place with infinite wisdom. Feel free to reach out to her if you have a story about conservation in Southeast Alaska that you’d like to share ([email protected]).

  • Big news for big trees? The Biden Administration has released draft plans for old-growth protections in our National Forests. What does that mean for the Tongass? Well, it’ll take some deep reading to know for sure, but you know we’re up to the challenge. Meanwhile, stretch those typing fingers because the comment period starts tomorrow, June 21, and lasts for 90 days. #NOGA #ProtectTheTongass Read more: https://lnkd.in/gtBtMAbB

  • SEACC is lucky to be guided by a smart, passionate board. When Judy Dax̱ootsú Ramos is not providing guidance in board meetings and on our Indigenous engagement committee, she's doing amazing work like co-leading a project studying the history of seal hunting in Yaakwdáat Kwáan and use of traditional ecological knowledge and ancestral conservation practices today. The work of this project was published in “Laaxaayík, Near the Glacier: Indigenous History and Ecology at Yakutat Fiord, Alaska" by the Smithsonian Scholarly Press.
