Solstice is a modern architecture & design studio creating beautiful, durable spaces for people where they both belong.

About us

Solstice is a modern architecture and design studio creating spaces for people where they both belong. Since 2020, we’ve been creating beautiful, durable design solutions for work and for life. With a team of veterans in a range of disciplines, we execute projects end to end, from concepting and design to construction. Service is our only signature. To keep innovating, we avoid one “style” or aesthetic, and we push the boundaries of design, materials, and convention. We’re your guide through every choice, challenge, and moment of joy in designing a space you love. We emphasize true partnership, and we invite the people we work with to get involved throughout our process. Solstice is trained and certified in the Passive House building standard and are DOE Zero Energy Ready Home Partners. We reimagine the impact of both form and function to build for sustainability and longevity. Our principles guide us to make thoughtful choices and create spaces that respond to their environment. Founded by CEO Caroline Wallace and Lead Architect Shay Myers, RA, CPHC®, Solstice is a fully remote team with roots in Salt Lake City and Southeast Ohio and working worldwide. Let’s create something beautiful together.

Excited to share a glimpse at a recent remodel barn our team had the pleasure to work on. Located in Columbus, Ohio - This project has 3 parts. 1️⃣ Remodel the interior main level to increase the functionality of the layout and to bring some vibrancy and freshness to tired spaces. 2️⃣ Update the exterior and add a fully-enclosed sunroom to the back of the house. ✨ The property has views of a beautiful nature preserve - who wouldn't want to enjoy THAT with their morning cup of coffee?! ✨ 3️⃣ Add a barn to the side of the property that increases overall storage space and function and adds a bit of design flare to the property. Here's a peak at the rendered kitchen, dining, family and sunroom. Swipe left to witness the before of the kitchen and dining (carpet and all!), and stay tuned for more progress updates on this special project as it moves into construction! . . . . #ohioarchitecture #architecture #architect #housedesign #design #ohio #columbus #columbusohio #kitchenremodel #remodel #sustainabledesign #sustainablebuilding

  • Pictured here - natural rough stone, grainy charred wood, sleek smooth steel, fluffy grasses, billowy trees - a variety of physical and visual textures in the Maple Grove Shelters project. This is an example of haptic architecture at work. Haptic architecture is all about design elements in spaces that make you want to reach out and touch them. It's about creating environments that invite you to interact physically, where every surface contributes to the story through texture and sensation. Is the secret sauce that turns a regular building or space into a place that feels just right. It's like adding an extra dimension to our experience of architecture, which helps us feel more connected, present, alive and ultimately happier in the places we inhabit. We invite you to embark on a sensory adventure to discover the textural delights in your environment. Next time you see a rough stone or brick wall, a plush leather sofa, a smooth steel railing, or any other interesting texture in a built space, run your hands along the surface and experience what it's like to fully interact with that element. What do you notice? What do you feel? . . . . #architect #architecture #design #designinspo #biophilicdesign #maplegrovehotsprings #maplegrove #tinyhome #adu #smallspaces #getoutside #idaho

  • Let's talk high performance design: what it is, how Solstice Design Studio applies it, and why it might matter to you too! In a nutshell, high performance design takes a comprehensive approach to maximizing efficiency, longevity, comfort as well as the return on investment of potential upgrades that can be applied to a new construction or remodel. This means considering a wide range of building components, like insulation, air and water barriers, HVAC equipment and windows and doors selection and placement. Both passive (eg, capturing heat from the sun or applying appropriate shading and siting to a project) and active systems (ie, heating, cooling and ventilation equipment) should work in concert to meet a project's specific performance goals, whether you're pursuing a certification like LEED or Passive House, or simply trying to build the best space you can within your budget! For some projects, this means pursuing strict performance criteria, such as a measured airtightness, insulation R-values or equipment efficiencies and can include thorough energy modeling to project energy demands during the life of the building. For others, it means identifying the highest impact upgrades to get the best ROI out of a project budget. In other words, the principals and systems of high performance design help our team create structures that cost less to operate and maintain, utilize healthier materials, are more comfortable and have a reduced carbon footprint. The methods can vary between new construction and remodels, commercial and residential, but the principles are always the same. WHY might this matter to you? There are a number of reasons. A few of our favorites: 💰 Economic benefits (cost savings, especially over the long term) 🌎 Reduced impact on the environment from the choices made for your home/structure 😁 Improved occupant health (because who doesn't appreciate improved indoor air quality?!) • Sited on a modest lot at the edge of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, Pugsley demonstrates how the power of thoughtful design within tight constraints plays a key role in adding much-needed dwellings within the existing fabric of the valley. Solstice loves collaborating with stakeholders on projects like these townhomes to maximize the use of space and resources, and to be part of the team bringing well-designed homes to urban areas throughout the West and Midwest. • What started as a remodel and pretty much evolved into a new build is approaching the finish line. Our Olympus View project is finally about ready for the new owners to call it home! (Long story short - there's only so much you can predict with old houses, and surprises are almost always buried in the walls.) We've worked closely with the owner and builder throughout this process and can hardly wait to share more in the coming weeks. Old drone pic of the project during framing because who doesn't love a pretty birds eye view of a construction site? . . . . #solsticedesignstudio #architecture #architect #utaharchitect #holladayutah #remodel #newhome #designinspo #buildingdesign #residentialdesign

  • This new barn in Hilliard, Ohio, which serves many purposes from storage, work shop and seed starting/mini greenhouse space, typifies the traditional structure found all over the Ohio countryside while subtly displaying unique details, like a south-facing window box in a bright shade of red in a corner reserved for seed-starting and plant propagation that will support the adjacent fruit, vegetable and native gardens. The reimagining of this creek-side site brings modern comfort and efficiency to the property without straying far from its rural and agricultural roots. Solstice loves working through projects like this one, because they push us to maximize functionality while navigating the specifics of the project's site and owners goals, all while balancing the many constraints these small spaces often come with (space requirements, performance goals, compliance with local jurisdiction, etc). Let's talk about what's possible on your current property. Drop a comment below or visit the link in our bio to reach out and chat with our team. Back in 2020, while on a trail run high up in the beautiful Colorado mountains, Solstice Design Studio founding partners, Caroline Wallace and Shay Myers, had an idea. 💡 To start an architecture and design studio with a focus of creating beautiful, durable spaces for work and life, rooted in an enjoyable, collaborative and focused design process from end to end, with service being the main signature. What started as a small design build team quickly grew into the studio as it stands today. We're Solstice Design Studio, and we create spaces for people where they both belong. Let's create something beautiful together. ✨ DM or visit the link in bio to walk through your design vision together. 🔗 . . . . #SolsticeDesignStudio #spacesforpeoplewheretheybothbelong #architect #architecture #architecturedesign #customhomes #linkedincommunity
