The #WHO Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) Initiative is pleased to announce that registrations are open for the upcoming 6th WHO EMT Global Meeting in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 5-7 November 2024. The meeting is generously hosted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, and supported by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Health and Prevention. This Global Meeting will once again convene countries, organizations, policymakers, health professionals, and experts from around the world to take stock of recent emergency responses, exchange knowledge and best practices, and set collective actions toward achieving the EMT 2030 Strategy goal of strengthening health emergency response capacities for all. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) is deeply concerned by cuts and structural changes to public health agencies proposed in the House Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (Labor-HHS-ED) appropriations bill. The cuts to key public health programs in the FY 2025 bill are unacceptable. This reduced funding would weaken the nation’s public health system on the heels of a pandemic that continues to kill hundreds of Americans daily. The House bill demonstrates a lack of foresight in public health and the tools necessary to ensure a healthier and safer country.  Key Points of Concern: ➡️ The $1.7 billion cut to the CDC: This significant reduction undermines the CDC’s ability to protect public health, safety, and security. ➡️ Elimination of funding for the Center for Forecasting and Analytics (CFA): This hampers the government's ability to predict and respond to emerging health threats. ➡️ Cuts to CDC programs on firearm injury prevention and climate and health research: These are critical areas that require more, not less, funding. ➡️ Structural changes at the NIH: Consolidating 27 institutes into 15 new centers could dilute focus and impede progress in critical health research. ➡️ Impeding DEIJ initiatives: Blocking policies that promote Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice undermines efforts to create an equitable public health workforce. ASPPH calls on Congress to restore funding and support a stronger public health infrastructure. Did you know that Asian women are the highest educated and yet the least likely demographic group in the United States to hold a leadership position? It was such a treat to share the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) stage with two rare exceptions to this rule: powerhouse Asian veterinarians and friends Christina Villarete Tran, DVM, the first Asian female Dean of a vet school in North America, and Katherine F., one of the only Associate Deans I’ve known to be an Asian veterinarian, and current doctor mentor leader. Thanks to everyone for participating in the discussion on the harmful effects of the Model Minority Myth and why the perpetuation of the Asian stereotype of being silent worker bees is harmful and can create unfair expectations, a bamboo ceiling for career progression, and create resentment.
