Congrats to our own Nancy Kuy, RDH, MSc for her article in Dimensions of Dental Hygiene highlighting the importance of school-based dental programs, particularly among immigrant children. Thank you for dedicating your time and voice to this worthy cause. With cultural sensitivity, we can address the significant barriers to care faced by asylum seekers and bring smiles and good oral health where they are needed. https://lnkd.in/gqXmwwXu

The need is great. The rewards are GREATER.
About us
Smile New York Outreach, through our affiliated dentists and other dental professionals, visits kids throughout New York City and Westchester County in the familiar surroundings of their schools, bringing much needed dental care to kids who may not otherwise have access. Smile New York Outreach is devoted to the ideal that all children deserve high-quality dental care. We embrace and support the various initiatives throughout the State of New York to improve the health of children, including greater access to dental care in schools. Knowing that many parents cannot take their children to the dentist due to issues including time off from work and transportation challenges, Smile New York Outreach brings the care to the need. Using the latest technology in portable equipment, a team of dedicated dental professionals provide preventive and restorative dental care to children right at school. Our flexibility and expertise allow us to transform classrooms, auditoriums, gyms or other suitable areas into fully functional dental offices for the day. Join us in our mission to bring smiles and good oral health to where they are needed. Call or text us at 855-957-4375 or email [email protected]. You’ll be glad you did.

We ❤️ NY! This weekend, CEO Steve Higginbotham had the opportunity to spend time with New York Governor Kathy Hochul sharing the amazing story and impact our Smile New York Outreach program has had on 1 million vulnerable, unserved children in NYC and surrounding schools over the past decade. We are super excited to host Governor Hochul and her health care team onsite at one of our 850 partner schools this fall to see our in-school dental team in action! Thank you Governor Hochul for your support of school-based dental care!

Despite available Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) resources for oral health care, researchers have identified several barriers that exist for Medicaid beneficiaries attempting to access oral health services. Nationally, one major barrier cited to accessing oral health care was low dentist participation in Medicaid. Enrollment in Medicaid, however, did not ensure that dentists actually treated Medicaid beneficiaries, with many dentists enrolled in Medicaid but providing a minimum amount or no services to Medicaid beneficiaries. An in-school dental program can help bridge the gap, but we need to find ways to make Medicaid more economically viable for dentists so we can increase accessibility for this underserved population.

The role of a school principal has evolved significantly over time. Beyond traditional education, schools now play a crucial role in addressing health-related issues. We are proud to partner with innovative principals across the country who recognize the value of an in-school dental program to ensure students stay healthy and in school learning. Thank you, principals, for your dedication to the holistic well-being of our students! #HappySchoolPrincipalsDay

This is just the kind of poignant story we hear all too often. Imagine, a young child earnestly saving the money left to him by the toothfairy to help buy a car. To lighten the load for underserved families, the Smile New York Outreach mobile dental program provides care to children at school. No special transportation needed. We are honored to provide this peace of mind to parents.
