Happy birthday to the legendary #aviationpioneer and pilot, #AmeliaEarhart, who was born on this day in 1897. Earhart’s many “firsts” in aviation and advocacy understandably overshadow her contributions to #AviationCommunications, an aspect of her achievements we especially appreciate at SmartSky. In particular, Earhart used Radio Direction Finding (RDF) technology to communicate with ground stations and other aircraft. This was particularly important during her long-distance flights, such as her solo transatlantic flight in 1932 and her attempted circumnavigation of the globe in 1937. Not unlike SmartSky’s use of narrow beamforming, and the way the ground and aircraft antennas seek the optimal connection, RDF directional antennas were rotated to determine the direction of the incoming radio signal. Modern navigation systems, such as GPS and advanced avionics, have largely supplanted traditional RDF. However, RDF is still used in certain applications, particularly in maritime navigation and for backup purposes in aviation. Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Model 10 Electra, was equipped with a Western Electric Model 13C radio transmitter and Model 20B receiver for radio communication. It used a Sperry GyroPilot gyroscopic automatic pilot, and the circular RDF aerial is visible above the cockpit in exterior photos. Check out more about this aviation icon!

A SmartSky corporate value is to: "Push the envelope with innovation." In keeping with that value, today's SmartSky #InnovatorSpotlight, highlights Katherine Stinson, who on this day in history, July 18, 1915, became the first American woman to pull off an aerial loop-the-loop at an air show in Chicago. But, that was just one of her many "firsts." In 1918, she became the first female Air Mail pilot, enabling the sending and receiving of large files in the pre-Internet era, literally "pushing the envelope through innovation"! #inflightconnectivity #womeninaviation Check out the National Aviation Hall of Fame's video for more on this brave aviator: https://lnkd.in/gpCvVNxc

"Because the SmartSky LITE system is geared toward light jets and turboprops, it is a particularly strong asset for connecting this class of airframes that has not previously had a streaming-level solution,” said Dan Lane, Vice President of Technical Services for Aero Centers. “Our sales and installation teams are excited to offer the significant upgrades to passenger experiences delivered by SmartSky’s proven connectivity.”✈️ https://lnkd.in/efHhaByV

Imagine this: Inflight connectivity without sharing bandwidth with other planes. SmartSky is the ONLY network using beamforming to provide each aircraft with its own dedicated connection. And no sharing means seamless streaming and uninterrupted calls, nationwide. 🌐🛫 #BusinessAviation #ATG #PrivateJet #AviationTech https://lnkd.in/euGcKGUB

What sets SmartSky apart? The bandwidth to move data both to AND from the airplane while in flight -- with equally high performance. This means when you send that picture or large attachment, it goes immediately, versus showing you that dreaded blue progress line or spinning wheel of death. https://lnkd.in/eSwwzs9t

“For folks who are buying their own private jets or chartering private jets, they expect pretty much the same connectivity to have in their office or home or with they get on an airline. This is the first system we’re seeing that can actually do that.” - Justin S., Director of Aircraft Management for a private jet charter and management company in Los Angeles.
