Opening Upton! Last month SK I celebrated the grand opening of Upton Place at 4000 Wisconsin with Donohoe Development Company, Aimco, and other project partners. This project represents the incredible opportunity to transform a recently vacant office building into a vibrant, mixed-use, residential and retail development. The transformation of the building was conceived through razing the existing office building, down to grade, while retaining most of the existing below grade parking garage. Upton places brings 689 residential units atop 100,000 SF of retail space, including a 55,000 SF Onelife Fitness a 30,000 SF Lidl US grocery store. Donohoe Construction Company Placemakr

I had a fascinating experience at SK I Architecture’s office this week where we used VR to tour one of our multifamily projects currently in the design process. It truly felt like I was physically transported to the building where I was able to feel the grandeur of the lobby and the spaciousness of the bedroom windows. Even the virtual edge of a balcony and accidently standing on the virtual kitchen island gave me butterflies! Using VR to review our designs seems vital to the development process. It's not just about seeing the spaces, it's about feeling and living them before they're even built. What are your thoughts on using VR in design processes? Two SK I projects were awarded at the PCBC Gold Nugget Awards! Reverb and The Camille each won Awards of Merit in the Best Multi-family Housing Community – 200 du/acre or more category. Reverb is 10-story, 312 unit mixed-use community in D.C.’s vibrant U Street Corridor, located just behind the iconic 9:30 Club. Reverb holds 4,900 sf for ground floor retail and an amenity rooftop penthouse with a pool, and green roof. The Camille is a 14-story, 181 unit mixed-use high-rise in Chevy Chase, MD. The building features 6,000 sf of retail, an amenity rooftop penthouse with a Clubroom, a lounge/ Co-working space, and outdoor terraces, green roof and bio retention, and a through block connection for pedestrian access from the neighboring community to Wisconsin Avenue. The building has achieved National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Emerald rating. CBG Building Company

The planned conversion of the former Duke Energy Headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina was recognized yesterday as one of the top submittals for the Reimagining Vintage Office Design Competition by Charlotte Center City Partners and CBI. The 14-story, 778,000-square-foot building was built in 1975. Plans include converting to multifamily with up to 440 residential units, rooftop amenity space and ground-floor retail. Prominence and Modera Old Ivy in Buckhead, Georgia form a new mixed-use development that performs two rare feats of urbanism in a difficult context; it is an ensemble of buildings constructed over time that makes a place, and it activates and humanizes a pedestrian-hostile streetscape on the corner of 6 and 7 lane roads without the benefit of contributing partners on the other side of the street.
