Emotions get a bad reputation, especially at work. But they're really just here to help us. They each serve a functional purpose. Here's the message of 8 core emotions. When we notice and label our feelings, and try to understand the message from them, it's a powerful practice.

What's your October goal re emotional intelligence? Mine is to stay tuned into emotions amidst a Very full month -- it's all too easy for me (despite 30 years of work on this!!) to get so focused on tasks that I tune out emotions. It's one of the many reasons I love being part of Six Seconds -- every time I'm in community with folks from around the globe who are likewise committed to PRACTICING emotional intelligence, I get support and inspiration. I highly recommend the Oct 3 session on relationships, featuring a special guest, the incredible Michael Eatman, sharing a simply powerful way to use emotional intelligence. ** For coaches & people interested in coaching, be sure to join on Oct 10. One of Six Seconds' global master trainers, Natalia Roitman, will share a process for using emotions to make goalsetting work in a dramatically different way than the typical "what do you want to work on" approach. ** ** both these are recorded, sign up to either join live and get the playback. I hope you'll join one of the many events this month with the global EQ community. I see 38 on the calendar!! So a ton of choices from free intro sessions, the incredibly enriching EQ Cafés (current focus: Emotions for purpose) -- and, of course, the transformative certification courses for those who want stunningly effective EQ tools for their organizations & clients. Please drop a comment about what you're considering attending -- or questions!

There are so many benefits to working with a coach, but today, let's highlight how coaching helps people "notice the gap" between their goals and their current behaviors. 🫸 🫷 Noticing the gap isn't about telling our clients that their current actions aren't going to get them to their goals. It's about increasing clients' self-awareness by helping them examine, explore, and ultimately realize there is a gap that's preventing them from achieving their goals.  We get into this mechanism for coaching and others in the Coaching World blog → https://bit.ly/3zmL6P6 Have you ever used this approach with a coaching client?

An arrow flows from 'Current Reality' to 'Desired Future,' highlighting how a coach helps individuals 'Notice, Examine, and Work Through the Gaps.' The visual encapsulates the transformative power of coaching, reinforcing how coaches enable clients to reach their potential.

And we would also add.... Return to office mandates aren't the solution to the real problem: poor management and low engagement. No matter what work setup a company or team decides on, it will not solve the people problems. Emotions drive people, and people drive performance. And while where people work certainly impacts the emotional reality, it isn't the biggest factor. That is the emotional intelligence abilities of your employees and especially their supervisors. The levels of trust and engagement. The culture. The feeling that "My organization really cares about my wellbeing," which peaked during COVID but now sits below 25% in the US, per Gallup. Put people first, and the policy will make sense.

Return to office mandates aren't the solution to the real problem: fake work. “Fake work” is a phrase that Airbnb’s Brian Chesky used to describe activities that feel like work, but don’t actually create value for the business — and employees are drowning in it. They are lost in endless meetings and messages and spending so much time trying to get the information they need and coordinating their work that they get very little actual work done. Office attendance does not fix fake work. Rigorously adopted set of working norms that increase coordination and improve communication and focus fix fake work. A business seeking to “operate like the world’s largest startup” — as Andy Jassy wrote in an Amazon company memo announcing a 5 day return to office yesterday — should be pioneering new, more efficient modes of work, not wilfully endorsing the old way as a solution to new problems. This moment demands more.

Are these findings possibly related? 1. "Compared to men in similar positions, women managers do significantly more to support employees and employee wellbeing. They check in more regularly, help manage workloads, and provide emotional and logistical support. Overall, employees reported women supporting their careers at twice the rate of men." - McKinsey's Women in the Workplace report 2. "Companies with a higher proportion of women in leadership positions are consistently rated by employees as great(er) places to work. These companies are perceived as safer, more enjoyable, and friendlier environments." - recent research from Pepperdine University published in the journal, Organizational Dynamics

New research: 1 in 5 employees worldwide feel lonely → more prevalent among younger workers under 35 → worse among employees who work fully remote Why does this matter? Social isolation and chronic loneliness have devastating effects on physical and mental health. Social wellbeing is essential to employee wellbeing. Fully remote employees report significantly higher levels of loneliness (25%) than do those who work exclusively on-site (16%) -- hybrid workers fall in between at 21%. https://lnkd.in/gBfMDMTT

Can you win Gratitude Bingo with 5 in a row? 🙏

2 people in my circle died recently, younger than me. Invited me to consider: How much of each day am I taking for granted? There is SO much that I feel grateful for 💕 , but also ignore most of the time. 💔 Just a few too long for the "bingo card" I made for this post... I live in a beautiful place, surrounded by trees I can go outside and watch bees buzzing and hummingbirds I love my work, and have supportive, dedicated people I get to work with every day My kids & wife are healthy and doing amazing things I can turn on the tap and drink the water I can walk to the kitchen I can sit here and type this message I can read it. y puedo escribir en español, un poco. With the help of AI, I can even 日本語で感謝の気持ちを伝える, قل أنا ممتن باللغة العربية (backward), or 100 other languages :) It's SO easy for me to focus on the unread emails, the long to-do list, the dishes I didn't wash, the errand I have to run, the post I made on LinkedIn that few people liked... SO many things outside myself call my attention every day. Thinking of those two people who passed away suddenly, I'm reminded: Today isn't guaranteed. What if I could remember that tomorrow and tomorrow? How about you?
