    With this summer already breaking records for extreme heat and storms, we’re also drawing optimism from emerging climate tech, some of which is as mind-bending as it is game-changing. We’ll be highlighting promising new tech over the coming weeks. Here are two to start with: 1. Clean hydrogen is a $100B industry producing 100M tons of hydrogen annually with growing demand. Clean H2 can play a key role in decarbonizing industries like steel, plastics, fuels and ammonia. Investments in hydrogen powered cars are growing too. Companies are working to produce low cost, clean hydrogen to decarbonize the world’s chemical and heavy industries. 2. Black carbon. Developing a carbon-neutral or carbon-negative method to produce hydrogen has the potential to not only decarbonize fertilizer and plastics but cut emissions from heavy industry, aviation and long-haul shipping, which together represent as much as 30% of global CO2 emissions.     In encouraging news, 30% of the world’s electricity is now generated from renewable energy sources like solar and wind — and the EU is leading the way. In a report from energy think tank Ember, rapid growth in renewables and technology have brought the world to a historic turning point with fossil fuel starting to decline. A decline in fossil fuel power is now ‘inevitable’, the report says.     In a new study in NATURE, researchers introduced 24 Australian farmers to an online climate service that uses data to project agricultural conditions. Farmers were asked to identify, assess and discuss management of long-term risks for their farms. The study found that services for farmers built on decades of data can help farmers better understand future climate risks — and potentially reduce what's called the psychological distance of climate change. Lack of confidence in the data raised doubts among farmers, but the study showed the expertise of trusted service providers can help boost farmers’ confidence and action.     Today, the iron and steel industry is responsible for nearly 10% of carbon emissions globally, with blast furnaces responsible for almost two tons of CO2 emissions each year. But green steel is coming into focus. Coming out of COP27, where 153 nations proclaimed net zero targets, approximately 90% of the steel industry now has emission targets — with reduction goals of 34% by 2030 and reaching carbon neutral by 2050.     Amazon announced last week that all of the electricity used in its operations was matched with 100% renewable energy in 2023 — seven years ahead of schedule. Amazon is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy and has invested billions of dollars in 500 wind and solar projects that generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 7.6 million U.S. homes. Some of this electricity powered Amazon’s operations directly and some went into local grids creating Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Taken together, Amazon either created or matched its electricity needs with renewable, clean energy. Renewable energy is increasingly available and cost effective — and is becoming a key element in corporate net zero strategies.
