The Olympic Games are the pinnacle event for sports like track and field and swimming. However, they still can't compete with the popularity of year-round sports like basketball and football. It is interesting, though, to see the large interest generated by emerging competitions such as breaking. Hotel prices in Paris for the Olympics are down 41% since last fall, indicating the event hasn't boosted tourism as hoped. Similarweb Digital Data shows a year-over-year decline in Paris lodging bookings from the top 10 countries, except for the US. This suggests that Paris, ranked 5th globally in international arrivals by Euromonitor International, doesn't rely on the Olympics. Visitors primarily come for the sights, culture, ambiance, and food, while the event's heavy security, initial high prices, and excitement might detract from these attractions. Interestingly, countries like Serbia and Croatia, with less usual influence on Paris travel, saw a spike in bookings, likely due to popular athletes taking part in the games. (SportsPro & FOX Sports) - Globally, the Euro Cup generated 280M searches in the last 28 days, with top players like Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Mbappé dominating the online buzz. (FOX Sports) - Despite being 5X less searched than the Euro 2024, Copa America saw 68M searches in the last 28 days, showcasing the tournament's impact. - As a proud Venezuelan, it's amazing to see our team, ‘La Vinotinto,’ reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2011. The term 'La Vinotinto' saw a significant traffic increase, reflecting the country's sentiment. 🇻🇪🥹 🎾 Wimbledon 2024: - While the Carlos Alcaraz-Novak Djokovic men’s final saw a 31% decrease in viewers from last year's final (2.2M vs 3.2M) (Sports Media Watch), viewers did not stop searching for terms related to Alcaraz-Djokovic. These terms generated over 2M searches in the last 28 days, according to Similarweb. - Athletes like Jasmine Paolini, Iga Swiatek, and Emma Raducanu stole the digital spotlight, marking a significant moment for women's sports. Exciting times for sports fans with the Olympics and the US Open ahead! 🥳🇪🇸 Targeting sports enthusiasts with tailored ads seems like a winning strategy to leverage the surge in viewership and online search trends. 📈 #SportsMarketing #DigitalTrends #Euro2024 #Wimbledon #CopaAmerica

Last Friday, the world was struck by an IT outage caused by an antivirus update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Microsoft reported that more than 8.5 million computers were affected, while Anderson Economic Group estimates the costs to easily exceed $1 billion. As people scrambled to cope with over 5,000 canceled flights and system shutdowns affecting businesses, banks, hospitals, and airlines, they also rushed to search for 'CrowdStrike' and related phrases, as reflected in the chart below. The event, its consequences, and conclusions are still unfolding, proving yet again the need to track and measure digital data in real time.
