We're part way through the 'annual update' season from SSA, Medicare and the IRS. Hot off the press, today the IRS released the new 2025 contributions limits for 401(k)s and IRAs. What's new? The contribution limit for employees who participate in 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans, and the federal government's Thrift Savings Plan will increase to $23,500, up from $23,000. The limit on IRA annual contributions remains constant at $7,000. Our take at Silvur. While increasing the limit (in line with inflation) helps Americans put additional funds away, tax deferred, for retirement, the reality is that most Americans are contributing at levels far lower than the maximum. According to Fidelity the average 55 year old's 401(k) balance is in the mid $200ks equating to approx $1k/ month in retirement income.
