On this day in 1865, roughly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, federal troops brought the long-awaited news of freedom to those still enslaved in Galveston, Texas.   As Juneteenth honors the true end of slavery, we’re reminded of the progress our country has made towards achieving equity and racial justice.
