For years, the myth that July 5th is the busiest day of the year for stray intakes has existed in the animal welfare industry. Data shows, however, that this isn’t actually the case. In her recent blog for The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, Dr. Emily Weiss suggests something powerful: That we use this as an opportunity to “pull up and remember that no matter how much we feel something to be true, the data matters.”

Think July 5th is the busiest stray intake day of the year? Think again! THE DATA IS IN: Last year, more pets were lost over Memorial Day than during July 4th celebrations. However, the upcoming 4th of July holiday usually does result in an increase of lost pets, making it the third top stray intake day of the year. Top Stray Intake Days in 2023: #1: May 30th (day after Memorial Day) #2: June 6th (8 days after Memorial Day) #3: July 5th (day after Independence Day)

🚨 Don't forget: Dogs & Data is THIS FRIDAY! 🚨 Transports have been on the decline since 2021. Today, fewer dogs are being transported, which has heavily impacted some of the most overburdened shelters in the nation. In this month's Dogs & Data session, we’ll share how transport has changed over the past six years and talk to organizations who have pivoted and are still successfully transporting both dogs and cats to safety. TOMORROW: Caring for animals and assisting the people who support them can feel daunting, especially as we are currently in the midst of a sheltering crisis. Add in a staffing shortage, and the situation becomes overwhelming. How do you prioritize when you don't have enough help or time? When should you take a break or push forward? How do you say 'no' to the next task so you can say 'yes' to your well-being? Learn how panelists from various animal welfare sectors manage wellness and set boundaries in an environment where staff and morale are constantly shifting. This roundtable, provided by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, is ideal for staff interested in adding coping strategies to their wellness toolkit.
