Improving access to excess since 2018 🚛 Let’s Free Food

About us

Sharing Excess is a national nonprofit that rescues and delivers surplus food to communities in need. Despite the fact that 40 million people in the country face food insecurity, nearly 40% of the nation's food supply goes to waste. We believe that surplus food can be a solution to food scarcity, and we are dedicated to connecting surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers, and farmers to organizations that address food insecurity. Our team is passionate about creating positive change in the world, and we embrace a fun, fast-paced, and innovative startup environment to achieve our goals. We believe that food should be a basic human right, and we are dedicated to improving access to excess food for all. Our efforts have already resulted in over 50 million meals to a network of nonprofits, food banks, and community organizations.

We love an ingenious solution to food waste that's a win for the climate *and* communities facing hunger. So when our friends at Sharing Excess started a pioneering food rescue and redistribution program out of New York City’s Hunts Point Produce Market, the largest produce terminal market in the world, we couldn't wait to lend a hand. Misfits Market is thrilled to donate $200,000 to help Sharing Excess (one of our donation partners since 2019!) expand their operations at Hunts Point and distribute 10 million pounds of fresh, nutritious food to half a million New Yorkers in the year ahead. 🍏 Just before #nycclimateweek, we celebrated this next chapter of our partnership by giving away more than 10,000 pounds of food to the residents of Co-Op City in the Bronx. A huge thanks to everyone who came out, including Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella), NYS State Senator Jamaal Bailey, NYS Assemblymember Michael Benedetto, and NYS Commissioner of Agriculture, Richard Ball, our very own Abhi Ramesh, and the Sharing Excess team led by Evan Ehlers. Watch to learn more, then visit our site to see how you can help improve food access just by shopping for groceries with us. https://lnkd.in/eqvApez2 #foodwaste #foodaccess #ClimateWeekNYC #HungerActionMonth

🎉 Some big news!🎉 We are beyond excited to announce that we’ve officially partnered with our friends at Misfits Market on an amazing initiative🥳💚 Last week, they made an incredibly generous donation of $200,000 towards our food rescue operation at Hunts Point in NYC. What better way to celebrate than with a massive free food distribution in the Bronx? We marked this announcement by distributing over 10,000 pounds of food to the amazing residents of Co-Op City. 🙌 This partnership will help us rescue and redistribute 10 million pounds of food annually in NYC, making a huge impact on local food security! 🍎🥕🍞 We’re just getting started, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come. Viva Los Misfits! 💚🎉🥑🍊🍍 Special shoutout to Abhi Ramesh and the entire team at Misfits, Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella) for speaking on this incredible partnership, and NYS State Senator Jamaal Bailey, NYS Assemblymember Michael Benedetto, and NYS Commissioner of Agriculture, Richard Ball, for joining us for this amazing celebration.

I would really appreciate your vote! ❤️ Hi LinkedIn fam, I'm excited to share that one of my past design projects has been nominated for the UX Design Awards 2024! It's such an honor to have my work positively evaluated by the expert jury among nearly 540 participants from 50 nations around the world 🌎 Feel free to check out the project and cast your vote if you like it! Thank you! https://lnkd.in/gAQDCJdJ I collaborated with Quinn K. on this project at Sharing Excess last summer to redesign the Warehouse App of the company, which helped streamline the work process of their warehouse workers and increase work efficiency. More details about the work can be found on my portfolio: https://lnkd.in/eRN_mt2q This project is particularly meaningful to us as it was our first time leading a UX project as the sole designers at the company, especially during a challenging time when we were affected by hiring freezes and working to recover. Through this work, we hope to inspire and empower other young professionals to be confident in their abilities to make an impact in their careers! 💛

WARP is proud to announce that we’ve helped Sharing Excess deliver over 10.5 million pounds of food across 21 states. 🎉 This food has saved households over $20 million in food cost savings. And diverted over 38 million pounds of harmful greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Additionally, Sharing Excess has hosted over 110 community food distributions, all of which have featured co-branded tents with WARP. The tents have been an extremely valuable asset to Sharing Excess’s team and were recently featured in a Produce News article (https://lnkd.in/gSc84pph) and their viral Mr Beast video (at 02:13 and 06:08 https://lnkd.in/gGevV-XN). We had the absolute honor of hosting First Lady Lori Shapiro, Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding, and State Rep. Regina Young at the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market to see our food rescue operation! 🎉🥬🍅🥦🍇🍎🥑🍌They joined us for an engaging tour to meet the amazing wholesalers at PWPM, learn about our partnership with the market, and volunteer alongside our team to sort and pack produce donations. It was inspiring to hear how excited and supportive they were about our collaboration with PWPM. Together over the last 2.5 years, we’ve rescued and redistributed over 20 million pounds of fresh produce to food banks and community organizations across the region. “For generations, Pennsylvania farmers have nourished our communities by donating their surplus through the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market. Food has the power to nourish families, strengthen communities, and provide sustainable income. From the Pennsylvania Food Policy Council to the investments we’re making at all levels of the agriculture and food industry … we are continuing the legacy of our farmers, and ensuring a healthy, robust, and sustainable future for our Commonwealth.” — Russell Redding, PA Secretary of Agriculture “We cannot accept that 20% of Philadelphians lack access to healthy food. Josh and I are committed to changing this by investing in food security across the Commonwealth…” “Our budget proposes $22 million to grow the minimum SNAP benefits, provides meals for school children, and invests in our local farmers.” — Lori Shapiro, First Lady of Pennsylvania At Sharing Excess, we see food surplus as an opportunity to improve food access throughout the Commonwealth. In Philadelphia alone, up to 1 million pounds of food goes to waste every day. A significant portion of this food is still perfectly edible. Meanwhile, 1 in 5 Philadelphians will experience food insecurity this year. By partnering with an incredible network of food businesses, food banks, and community organizations, we can bridge the gap to effectively redistribute this surplus to those who need it most. We can reduce waste, save businesses money, and provide crucial food access to millions of people. It’s a true win-win for all🌱💚
