Share Our Strength – No Kid Hungry is excited to announce its Nutrition in Housing (NIH) pilot evaluation micro report. This report provides the evaluation results derived from their collaboration with Mercy Housing and The NHP Foundation – two of the largest affordable housing organizations in the U.S. The NIH initiative was implemented in affordable housing communities in Stockton and Esparto, CA, Savannah GA, and Houston, TX where sites adopted sustainable strategies and programs that increase access to healthy food and improve food security. This micro-report highlights the effects of the NIH pilot in three main areas: food environment, SNAP enrollment and utilization, and health and well-being. Strategies included new food delivery initiatives using Instacart Health Fresh Funds and Little Red Box; and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/EBT) enrollment support; afterschool youth programs with nutrition-related activities; community gardens; nutrition-related classes for adult residents; food pantries and distribution, including emergency pantries; and increased collaboration with farmer’s markets. Share Our Strength thanks Instacart, which generously supported our collaboration with our California sites with a philanthropic investment. Read the micro report here: bit.ly/4flGTLC

Last Thursday, I had the honor to travel to Share Our Strength grantee Brandywine Heights Area School District and see their rural non-congregate summer meals program in action. Thanks to new federal flexibilities, free, nutritious summer meals are more accessible to rural families. I am beyond inspired by the care that the Brandywine Heights team have for their community, making sure that these kids have the food they need to play, learn, and grow! Thank you as well to WFMZ-TV for highlighting this program in such a thoughtful, wonderful way! 🧡 https://lnkd.in/eddF-eGT

It is my honor and privilege to co-author an op-ed shedding light on the pervasive issue of summer hunger among children in Texas. In collaboration with Texas State Rep. Armando Walle, we discuss the impact of the Summer EBT program, which provides crucial grocery-buying benefits to families during the summer months. While the program is already making a difference in many states, we emphasize the need for Texas to prioritize the implementation of Summer EBT to support the 3.8 million eligible kids in summer 2025. As we prepare for the upcoming legislative session, let's rally to ensure that all children have access to nutritious meals during the school year and throughout the summer. Please read the full op-ed for details on how we can make a difference. #EndChildhoodHunger #SummerEBT #TexasKidsDeserveBetter #NoKidHungry #txlege https://lnkd.in/gw9bGajE

Share Our Strength’s #NoKidHungry team was presente at the UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) conference. We joined corporate, non-profit and government leaders that get that understanding the Latino experience and connecting with this community is a business imperative. Latinos make up the youngest and fastest growing segment of the U.S. population with 1 in 4 children in the U.S. being of Latino descent. For us at #NoKidHungry, it’s essential that we’re intentional about serving this population, that we show up and do the work to understand the values, contributions and unique barriers faced by Latino families and children. It was rewarding to hear Unidos reference some of the work we’ve done in partnership with the Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition around culturally responsive strategies to reach this community. I am thankful for the time with my wonderful colleagues, to connect with new and old friends and be in community with people that get it. Like CNN Political Commentator and The View Co-Host Ana Navarro said at the Latinas Luncheon, “Have we advanced yes, have we advanced enough, no”. Here are more words of wisdom by other conference speakers: - Be consistent, don’t just show up when you need us or as one and done. Get out from behind your desk and be in and with the community. -We are highly relational. Trust is essential, which is why the “Promotores” or community health worker model is so effective to reach our community - 60% of community health workers are Latino. - Don’t ever think of Latinos as just Latinos, we are America, we need to claim our space. -Bringing Spanish language skills to a job should be rewarded. -Seek alliances inside and outside the Latino community. We can’t do it alone! -Whichever organization you serve, serve in another way, get involved. Extend yourself. Tomorrow demands that you are better than you are today. 📸: Matthew Smith, Stacie Sanchez Hare , Jeannine Rios, PhD, Ana Maria Rivera , Imelda Ojeda, Diego Alonso Virgues, Teresa Contreras-O'Reilly , Andrea Cuellar, MPP , Daisy M. Last week, I traveled to Smithville to showcase their rural non-congregate summer meals program. Thanks to new federal flexibilities, more kids will have access to free nutritious summer meals in their community. I am so inspired by the passion and heart Smithville ISD staff have for ensuring that kids have the food they need to thrive and I'm so grateful that they see No Kid Hungry as a collaborative partner.💕
A rural school district used to serve 25 meals a day in the summer. Now, they've quadrupled that.
