This week, a handful of 7GAE team members are joining members of NOMA Detroit to volunteer at this year’s Project Pipeline Summer Camp in Kalamazoo! A free, three-day camp held at Western Michigan University, Project Pipeline offers local students who are underrepresented in architecture and adjacent professions a chance to meet with real-world architects, planners, and other design professionals. It is exciting to see 7GAE team members volunteer with a program that increases students’ exposure to the world of architecture and hopefully sparks their interest in pursuing a design career. We are also excited to highlight the volunteerism of Nadine Nicole Rios-Rivas, 7GAE Project Coordinator, and Hayward Babineaux, Architectural Designer at Abonmarche, for championing the Kalamazoo Camp. Hayward and Nadine have been involved in the Project Pipeline Kalamazoo Camp since its inception in 2017. Their leadership and commitment to breaking down barriers such as cost and transportation for students have allowed the camp to grow from three students in the first year to 23 participants last summer! It will be great to see this year’s turnout and hear from our team members who are getting involved for the first time. We are truly touched to see our team come together during challenging moments, and to have leaders like Amber Anderson who are not afraid to step into action. Since joining the team in 2021, Amber has radiated Love and the other values we uphold at 7GAE and across Bodwé Professional Services Group. #WéCulture #Values #EmployeeAppreciation #SupportingTribes #IndigenousDesign #AECcareers #Leadership
This week, we are pleased to share this recognition of a Bodwé team member who has demonstrated one of our seven core values outside the office. Senior Interior Designer Amber Anderson at Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering went out of her way to help her colleagues get clean drinking water during a main water break in Grand Rapids back in March. Read about Amber’s selfless act of Love in the included graphic. Thank you, Amber, for your commitment to the Bodwé Values in support of our mission to grow the economy and legacy of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. When Alex and Scott gave presentations to the Rapid City public, they aimed to connect with community members who might have connections to the site’s history. Getting feedback and questions from the community, the team diplomatically shared the mitigation activities and heard more stories about the site’s impact on the people of Rapid City. We encourage those interested in hearing from Alex and Scott personally about the Rapid City Mitigation Activities to join a virtual presentation this Friday, July 19, at 1pm EST (3pm MT). Learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/gi5g8E7R Those who can’t make the virtual session can read the full story of the Rapid City Mitigation Project here: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV #HistoricalPreservation #PictorialDisplay #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned
One of the final tasks as part of the Rapid City Mitigation Activities at the Oyate Health Center (OHC) is conducting presentations to share this important history with the public. Led by Alexander Hokkanen and J. Scott Winchester, sessions for the Rapid City community were held while work on the OHC was still underway. More recently, Alex and Scott presented at the South Dakota Historical Society’s annual conference. Now, the 7GAE team is days away from holding a virtual presentation that encourages attendance from tribal citizens spread across west-river South Dakota. We invite anyone interested in hearing a more in-depth explanation of our team’s collective work to participate in the presentation this Friday, July 19, at 3pm EST (1pm MT). Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gi5g8E7R Individuals who wish to learn more but can’t make the virtual session can read "The Journey of the Rapid City Mitigation Project” on our website: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV #HistoricalPreservation #PictorialDisplay #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned

7GAE is excited to sponsor two special events from the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC)! Open now through January 5, 2025, "Roots of Wisdom" is KNC’s first large-scale traveling exhibition, which was developed by the Oregon Museum of Sci OMSI. The interactive exhibition shares stories from Indigenous communities and explores how traditional knowledge and Western science can come together to provide solutions to the ecological challenges we face. Additionally, KNC has partnered with the MATCH-E-BE-NASH-SHE-WISH BAND OF POTTAWATOMI INDIANS to create a feature on Mnomen (wild rice), the harvesting process, and its importance in local ecosystems. The second event is a lecture and book signing today with Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of the widely acclaimed book, “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants”. Representatives from the Buildings Services Branch of Bodwé Professional Services Group will join Kimmerer at a luncheon today and later attend her lecture at 6pm in Kalamazoo’s Chenery Auditorium. Our work to blend natural and built environments reflects our commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the natural world. We are happy to be a sponsor of these two events and encourage members of the Kalamazoo community to visit the Roots of Wisdom exhibition before it ends. From architects to administrative professionals, there is a need for Indigenous people at all levels of the design industry. Seven Generations A E has hosted sessions giving insights on design techniques such as 3D printing for many Pathways participants when they visit our Kalamazoo office, offering tribal members a firsthand look at careers within the design industry. We are proud to be part of the Mno-Bmadsen portfolio of companies under Bodwé Professional Services Group, and love having the opportunity to introduce tribal citizens to an array of careers, including those within architecture and engineering. Learn more about Mno-Bmadsen’s Pathways Program, eligibility, and how to register by visiting https://lnkd.in/gvmD6mW5. #AECcareers #CareerExploration #DesignProfessionals #Architecture #Engineering #IndigenousDesign #DiversityinDesign
As writer Diana Budds points out in her recent article for The Architect's Newspaper, there is a lot of design work happening in communities across Indian Country – but not enough Indigenous architects to do it. With quotes from various Indigenous design professionals, this story brings attention to the challenges Indigenous people face in a Western-influenced industry and how they are leaning into their cultural identity and beliefs to guide them through each design project. We encourage everyone to read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gZ_VN7rn As a #triballyowned family of companies deeply rooted in the world of design, we are always consciously aware of the need for Indigenous architects. Working to support the mission to grow the economy and legacy of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, Bodwé Group proudly participates in Mno-Bmadsen’s Pathways Program, an initiative that empowers tribal youth and adults and provides them with resources to gain meaningful employment. As we continue to push for increased representation of Indigenous people in STEM-related fields, especially within the AEC industry, we invite others to learn more about the Pathways Program by visiting: https://lnkd.in/gvmD6mW5. #AECcareers #CareerExploration #DesignProfessionals #Architecture #Engineering #IndigenousDesign #DiversityinDesign

Do you know how long the drive is from Kalamazoo, MI to Rapid City, SD? Traveling over 1,000 miles last December, 7GAE Project Coordinator Alexander Hokkanen made the wintry 17-hour journey to the Oyate Health Center to install the seven-panel interactive interpretive display as part of the Rapid City Mitigation Project activities. Read the full story of the Rapid City Mitigation Project at https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV Please also consider participating in next week’s virtual presentation, “Historic Preservation on the Oyate Health Center Campus: Rapid City Indian School and Sioux Sanatorium,” hosted via Microsoft Teams on July 19, 2024, at 3pm EST (1pm MT): https://lnkd.in/gi5g8E7R #HistoricalPreservation #PictorialDisplay #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned
With historical context gathered, the Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering team working on the Rapid City Mitigation Project activities proposed a new way to share the important background of the Oyate Health Center (OHC) site in Rapid City, SD. They designed, curated, and installed an interactive interpretive display for community members to explore their shared history while accessing care at the OHC. Equipped with touch-enabled monitors and audio capability, the interpretive display brings to life each narrator’s oral history, and the press timeline offers a glimpse into what was happening in and around the Rapid City area throughout history. Learn what challenges the team had to overcome to ensure the installation went up in time by reading “The Journey of the Rapid City Mitigation Project” on our website now: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV. We are also excited to share information about an upcoming virtual presentation by Alexander Hokkanen and J. Scott Winchester, who will detail our team’s collective work on the mitigation activities, including what went into the creation and installation of the interpretive display.
