Nurses, doctors, and Sentara colleagues tearfully joined Zack Pate's family and friends as they lined the hallways of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. This powerful expression of respect and dignity is known as an 'Honor Walk.' Organ donors and their loved ones are honored as they make the final journey from the ICU to the operating room, where Zack's heart was donated to save the life of another. Zack, 29, lived with mental illness for much of his life, and HIV for a decade. His heart was donated to a recipient with HIV through the HOPE Act. Zack’s heart donation is only the third HIV-positive heart donation in the country. His donation speaks volumes to the strides we are making in healthcare for the HIV community, and nationwide. We have been named in beckershospitalreview among 17 other healthcare systems for auditing and removing invasive questions surrounding mental health from physician and credentialing applications. Almost 4 in 10 physicians are either concerned about seeking mental health care given questions in medical licensing, credentialing, and insurance applications, according to a 2023 survey led by the Physicians Foundation. VOICES of Black Women is a pivotal long-term study led by the American Cancer Society to better understand how and why Black women are disproportionately impacted by health conditions like cancer.
