“You didn’t sign up to be assaulted.” 💬 Anton Bell, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Hampton, Va., spoke to our Sentara CarePlex team about the protections available for healthcare workers facing workplace violence. Bell encouraged clinicians to file charges if they faced violence or harassment on the job, explaining that healthcare workers have rights and support within the justice system. 🩺 Assaulting a healthcare worker in VA carries serious consequences, including jail time. Bell noted that health workers are often reluctant to prosecute out of compassion for the assailants, “My word of caution is that you are a priority, and you should not feel bad or guilty about prioritizing yourself.” #HealthcarePros #WorkplaceSafety #SentaraCares

Continuing to recap all our impactful community events from this weekend - we were grateful to partner with the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute at their 3rd annual Men's Health Fair. We had more than 40 Sentara colleagues at the event, offering health education through our Sentara Mobile Care Vehicle, and prostate cancer screenings to those eligible. In total, we screened 135 Black men for prostate cancer. We know Black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer and face more challenges receiving care. We're committed to improving health care for all.💛 #OneSentara #ProstateCancerAwareness #HealthEquity #SentaraCares #EarlyDetection

Audrey Leishman was living a healthy life when what seemed like the flu turned into a life-threatening battle with Sepsis. After being rushed to the ICU at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, she spent five days in a coma. Audrey survived, but like many, she had never heard of Sepsis. She is now helping others through her Begin Again Foundation, offering financial support to Sepsis survivors and increasing awareness about the medical condition. At Sentara, we’re raising awareness of sepsis and improving care. Our efforts have increased survival rates by 36% by implementing new, evidence-based protocols across all 12 hospitals, saving lives every day. Know the signs, act fast, and help save lives. We love to see the impact that our microgrants have on communities! It looks like these students had such a fun time exploring the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and learning how to be more environmentally conscious. #SentaraCares #Sustainability

We are so grateful to be awarded a $15,000 grant from Sentara Health to support the Mariners' Lake Stewards Program during the 2024-25 school year! This hands-on program builds awareness and understanding in students and teachers on the effects of human behavior in regards to the health and sustainability of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. "What I love about the Lake Stewards program is that the students are given the power to take action on climate-based solutions in their environment," says Mariners' Senior Science Educator Shantelle Landry. This program builds on the success of the Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) curriculum, which has served over 4,000 students and nearly 70 teachers to date! This award will fund student transportation, supplies, teacher professional development, and staff time. Thank you, Sentara, for your investment in the future environmental stewards of our community! #iamamariner #sentaracares Photo: Students from Denbigh High School planting Eel Grasses in Mariners' Lake under the supervision of Mariners' Senior Science Educator Claudia Moncada in Spring 2024.
