SIA is deeply saddened by the passing of Charlie Sporck, a pioneer of semiconductor production and innovation and co-founder of our association. Mr. Sporck led National Semiconductor from 1967 to 1991. Throughout his career, he was a strong champion for strengthening the competitiveness of the U.S. semiconductor industry. He also led efforts to found SEMATECH, one of the first public-private consortiums dedicated to U.S. semiconductor R&D and manufacturing. He was active in promoting STEM education, funding education opportunities at the collegiate and elementary levels to build the next generation of semiconductor talent. We are incredibly grateful for Mr. Sporck’s contributions to SIA and our industry, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the many people he worked with and inspired. Mr. Sporck’s full obituary is available here: https://lnkd.in/eymzMrKj

SIA welcomes the release of final regulations implementing the “Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit,” a tax credit enacted as part of the landmark #CHIPSAct to incentivize domestic chip production. These regulations are a powerful driver of private investment in the U.S. #semiconductor ecosystem, and have already helped spark substantial investments in the U.S. In fact, companies in the semiconductor ecosystem have announced 90 new projects across America—totaling $450 billion in private investments—since the CHIPS Act was introduced. SIA commends the U.S. Department of the Treasury for adopting a holistic approach in implementing the tax credit and encouraging a wide range of investments necessary to manufacture semiconductors and manufacturing equipment. SIA applauds today’s announced #CHIPSAct incentives for Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC), which are designed to help build a new hyper-pure semiconductor-grade polysilicon facility in Michigan. Polysilicon is a critical material used in the production of #semiconductors, and extremely high-purity polysilicon is needed to produce the advanced chips powering AI, autonomous driving, telecommunications, and more. We applaud HSC for investing ambitiously in America and commend the U.S. Department of Commerce for its work to diligently allocate CHIPS incentives.
We’ve got big news! 🎉 Today the U.S. Department of Commerce announced $325 million in proposed CHIPS funding for HSC. The funding allows us to consider investing in additional semi-grade polysilicon production capacity and capabilities for the first time in more than two decades. We are grateful to our dedicated champions who tirelessly advocated for us and understand how vital HSC is to Michigan and the Great Lakes Bay Region, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Senator Debbie Stabenow, Senator Gary Peters and Congressman Dan Kildee. Thank you for believing in our vision. Why is this funding such a big deal? 🤖 It positions HSC to continue serving as a top polysilicon supplier to the leading-edge semiconductor market that powers AI applications. ⚓ Commerce’s support helps ensure that the foundation of the semiconductor industry supply chain remains anchored here in the United States. 🛡️ It demonstrates U.S. government recognition of the essential role HSC’s semi-grade polysilicon plays in national security. ⚙️ Our proposed project is estimated to create nearly 180 manufacturing jobs and over a thousand construction jobs over the duration of potential construction. Join us in celebrating this exciting milestone!

SIA commends today’s announced $1.6 billion funding opportunity to accelerate new advanced packaging R&D. Advanced packaging – the process of combining multiple chips into a single package to improve performance and reduce cost – is a critical step in modern #semiconductor innovation, and new techniques will be required to meet the technology demands of the industry’s largest growth segments. Today’s announcement opens funding applications for: 1) equipment, tools, processes, and process integration, 2) power delivery and thermal management, 3) connector technology, including photonics and radio frequency, 4) chiplets ecosystems, and 5) co-design/electronic design automation. We congratulate the U.S. Department of Commerce on reaching this important milestone and applaud their continued commitment to diligently advancing the priorities of the #CHIPSAct.
Today, the Biden-Harris Administration issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity funded by the CHIPS and Science Act to enable the United States semiconductor industry to adopt innovative new advanced packaging flows for semiconductor technologies. https://bit.ly/40h4jN0
