Our mission is to break the generational cycles of incarceration.

About us

RISE is the largest nonprofit organization in Nebraska focused solely on habilitative programming in prisons and reentry support. At RISE, transformation starts pre-release and continues post-release. Our inside/out model bridges incarceration to the community and considers all the critical steps in that journey. We prepare and train people for each phase through intensive character development, employment readiness, job creation through entrepreneurship, family programming and case management. We transform people in the community by building awareness and empathy that leads to support and opportunity. These connections heal families, create employment pathways and lower recidivism. The mission of RISE is to break generational cycles of incarceration. It's simple for us. Nebraska is the most overcrowded prison system in the United States. The United States incarcerates more people than the rest of the world. Freedom from cycles of incarceration means people are building wealth for their families, parenting their children and making positive contributions to their community. It means more tax dollars for education, infrastructure and services. Freedom from cycles of incarceration means there are legislative changes to outdated sentencing laws and people aren’t punished because of race or economic status. It means that generational incarceration in families is stopped dead in its tracks. Freedom from cycles of incarceration means improved public safety, available housing, more mental health and substance abuse support, and higher levels of education attainment.

"The family used to come every weekend. We would take the kids. We would go to the park. Kerry was our person who did the barbecue. He was our barbecue person. And so we spent the holidays together. You know, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays. After he was gone, it seemed like everybody stopped coming. Everybody stopped coming after Kerry went to jail." RISE is committed to breaking the generational cycles of incarceration, and this reentry simulation offers a unique opportunity for community members to better understand the challenges faced by individuals returning to society after incarceration. Did you know that 95% of incarcerated individuals will eventually return to the community? Each year, between 1,800 and 2,400 people are released from Nebraska’s prisons alone. The reentry process can feel overwhelming, as returning citizens face a complex web of housing, employment, and financial barriers. During the simulation, participants will receive a “life card” representing the identity of a returning citizen. Over the course of an hour, you will navigate “four weeks” of reentry, making decisions and facing the challenges that accompany reintegration into society. While this experience cannot fully capture the reality of reentry, it is designed to be thought-provoking and educational. Will you join us and participate in this unique event?
