❗️Breaking News in Coral Restoration❗️ We are thrilled to share scientific proof that our coral restoration efforts are paying off 🙌🏽🪸 Over the past thirty years, Dr. Margaret Miller, SECORE’s Research Director, has been witnessing tremendous coral loss in the Caribbean due to disease, hurricanes, and heatwaves. But in the summer of 2023, something unexpected happened… After the record-breaking heatwave hit the Caribbean, our team in Mexico set out to monitor the corals on the reefs, expecting nothing short of a devastating loss of healthy corals. The scene was indeed catastrophic—most wild corals were severely bleached, and many had already perished. BUT, amid this disaster, they made a surprising discovery: the juvenile corals, bred through SECORE’s Assisted Sexual Coral Propagation were still thriving! I.e. they showed remarkable resistance to bleaching compared to their wild counterparts. 🪸 SECORE immediately reached out to our many partners in the Caribbean, which got back with the same observations - our propagated corals were surviving the intense heatwaves sweeping through the region! The study led by Dr. Miller, now peer-reviewed and published, confirms the powerful potential of SECORE's approach in giving coral reefs a fighting chance in our rapidly warming world. “These results provide a lot of encouragement and confirmation that restoration using assisted coral recruits can play an important role in orchestrating their persistence into our warmer future,” says Dr. Miller, but she also reminds us that “securing the future of coral reefs is absolutely dependent on humankind’s success in controlling global warming.” Congratulations to all co-authors, partners, donors, and supporters who helped to make this happen! 🙌🏽 Read the full study now and learn how we’re securing a future for our oceans! 🐠 #CoralRestoration #OceanConservation #marinelife #diving #Sustainability #ocean #ClimateChange #caribbean #marinebiology #coralseeding #secore #coralreefs #underwater #climateaction #environment #corals #biodiversity #ecosystem #marineresearch

About us
SECORE International, Inc. is a leading conservation organization for the restoration of coral reefs. With sound science as the basis of our work, findings and developed methods are translated by engineers into innovative techniques and tools to implement reef restoration at much larger scales than currently possible―which is urgently needed, regarding the dire situation of coral reefs worldwide. We have established a global network of scientists, public aquarium professionals as well as local authorities, partners and stakeholders. We share our knowledge in training events and workshops, and mentor our partners for implementing new techniques on-site. Our focus is to work with breeding corals, enabling us to get huge numbers of coral babies by collecting coral germ cells during natural spawning events on the reef, while supporting the corals' genetic diversity and consequently promoting reef resilience at the same time. We develop tools to raise corals without the need for sophisticated land-based facilities and to bring them back to the wild in more efficient ways. We are dedicated to giving coral reefs a fighting chance for the future!

„A fisherman’s village in the northeastern tip of Tobago, surrounded by secluded beaches and hills of lush forest. “– is how Alex describes Charlotteville, Tobago.🌳🐚 SECORE’s Alex van der Last, Restoration Technician, and Kelly Latijnhouwers, Restoration Technology Manager, traveled to Charlotteville, to support the Institute of Marine Affairs, Trinidad & Tobago team in their first coral spawning work. „Everyone involved was excited to have a first go at collecting, rearing and outplanting corals using SECORE‘s CRIBs and settlement substrates,“ says Alex. He and Kelly held a training event on how to set up our floating coral kindergardens (CRIB) and other work that goes into it. They focused on collecting spawn from the boulder brain coral (Colpophyllia natans), a species native to Tobago and the largest brain coral colony in the Caribbean; and they were successful❗️ Kelly - a seasoned coral spawning witness - mentioned that this was the biggest spawn of boulder brain coral she has ever seen. 🪸😱 They collected spawn from 19 boulder brain coral colonies, fertilized it right away on the boat and placed most of it into the CRIB, while the rest made its way to their lab. We are thrilled about the progress and look forward to continuing this important work with our partners. These efforts are crucial in preserving Tobago’s stunning coral reefs, and we're excited for what comes next! Stay tuned for more updates on our journey to protect our oceans. 🌏 #CoralRestoration #OceanConservation #Sustainability #ClimateChange #marinebiology #coralseeding #climateaction #marineresearch Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) Trinidad & Tobago: @IMAgovTT

Coral Restoration in Tobago! 🪸 Last year, we welcomed a new partner within our Training and Capacity Building program: The Institute of Marine Affairs, Trinidad & Tobago (IMA) in Tobago, with project lead Dr. Anjani Ganase. 🙌🏽 This July, SECORE joined forces with the IMA team for our first coral rearing activity in this region, and it was a huge success! 😍 "We experienced a great spawning of boulder brain corals (Colpophyllia natans) (…) and managed to get some settlement and outplants as well," shared Dr. Anjani Ganase. Additionally, our teams observed successful spawning from Orbicella faveolata and Montastrea cavernosa. These efforts are paving the way for future coral restoration in Tobago and beyond. A huge thank you to the team! ✨ Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) Trinidad & Tobago: @IMAgovTT #CoralRestoration #OceanConservation #marinelife #diving #Sustainability #ocean #ClimateChange #caribbean #marinebiology #coralseeding #secore #coralreefs #underwater #mexico #florida #climateaction #environment #corals #biodiversity #ecosystem #marineresearch

In the wake of the devastating 2023 heatwave, South Florida's coral reefs have experienced an unprecedented loss. Of the 160 documented genotypes of the iconic Elkhorn coral, a staggering 77% have perished, leaving only 37 genotypes at their native reefs. NOAA Fisheries compiled data from many partners and published its report. This heartbreaking loss underscores the fragility of our marine ecosystems and the urgent need for decisive action. SECORE International has been unwavering in its mission to safeguard the future of these critical corals. By harnessing the natural reproductive processes of corals, we are working to produce genetically diverse and resilient offspring, capable of withstanding the increasingly harsh conditions of our oceans. Our work represents a beacon of hope in the fight to preserve these vital ecosystems. However, this crucial work is at a tipping point and cannot continue without your support.🙌🏽 Your donation to SECORE International is not just a contribution; it is a lifeline for coral reefs teetering on the brink of collapse. By giving, you are directly investing in the preservation and restoration of these irreplaceable underwater forests, ensuring they can recover and thrive for generations to come. Now is the time to act—together, we can rebuild what has been lost and secure a resilient future for our oceans. Visit the link in our bio to make a donation now ❗️ Read the report:

Diving deeper into the Fire Wall Project 🔥 The Fire Wall Project is about investigating whether fire coral, specifically Millepora complanata, can improve the success of coral restoration. We are studying if fire coral can help prepare areas for other types of coral by creating a better environment for them to grow. Think of it as planting strong, fast-growing plants in a garden first to make it easier for more delicate plants to thrive later. 🌱->🌳 By introducing Fire Coral first, we aim to create conditions that help more fragile and slow-growing corals survive and flourish. Additionally, fire coral itself is endangered, so restoring it helps protect this important species too.❗️ This project represents a major step forward in our collaboration between Reef Renewal Curacao and SECORE International; with generous support from Oceankind. Stay tuned for more updates on the Fire Wall Project and follow our journey as we strive to protect and restore the beautiful coral reefs of Curaçao! Your support and engagement are crucial as we work towards a sustainable future for our oceans. 🌺🐠 #CoralRestoration #OceanConservation #marinelife #diving #Sustainability #ocean #ClimateChange #caribbean #marinebiology #coralseeding #secore #coralreefs #underwater #mexico #florida #climateaction #environment #corals #biodiversity #ecosystem #marineresearch #firecoral #curacao #rrfc
