Whoa, peregrine falcons under the West Seattle Bridge? The West Seattle Bridge has been home to baby peregrine falcons (called eyasses!) and their parents for most years since 2005. We recently helped local ornithologists get up close and personal with this year's batch of baby peregrine falcons as they study bird transportation (or as the bird experts put it, the peregrine falcons' movement and migration habits). Our own SDOT Roadway Structures engineering and bridge crew team assisted Urban Raptor Conservancy President Patti Loesche and Vice-President Ed Deal to observe and band the baby birds of the resident peregrine falcons at the West Seattle Bridge.

It's shaping up to be a busy summer for the Seattle Department of Transportation. In just the past few days, a number of projects to maintain and modernize Seattle's streets reached significant milestones. We’re on track to strengthen 16 bridges across Seattle to be safer during an earthquake: https://lnkd.in/gHb8QSFU Our #LevyToMoveSeattle-funded Bridge Seismic Program helps us proactively strengthen bridges across Seattle to make them more resilient in the case of a major earthquake. We’ve completed 5 of these seismic retrofit projects and we’re on track to complete 11 more, with major work taking place this year. Here, SDOT Director Greg Spotts examines carbon fiber at the McGraw St bridge, which will be wrapped around the bridge so that it can withstand more powerful earthquakes.

The 2024 Vision Zero Action Plan is now available. This plan outlines steps to eliminate severe and fatal crashes on Seattle's streets. To rapidly advance progress towards zero lives lost and people seriously injured, we shift our framework to adopt the multilayered Safe System Approach established by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It builds and reinforces multiple layers of protection to prevent crashes from happening in the first place and minimize harm caused when crashes do occur.
