We'd like to extend a warm thank you to the Plymouth Foundation for hosting the Blue Future Conference on October 21st and 22nd. Hailey Bathurst and Nadir Ait-Laoussine from our team attended the conference. Hailey spoke on the Marine Public Policy Roundtable facilitated by Stacey Messier. Our strategy for tackling climate issues must incorporate an ocean of stakeholders, with an emphasis on the positive impact of public policy initiatives on innovation. Policy can spur innovators towards critical milestones and developments if incorporated correctly. We hope you enjoyed the event! See you next year. #bluefuture2024 #publicpolicy

This year’s 1000 Ocean Startups Annual Gathering brought out the best of our community, with members reverse-pitching some of the most ambitious and transformative ocean start-ups making waves today. Through these pitches, we got an inside look at ventures taking on the ocean’s biggest challenges with ingenuity, fresh perspectives and purpose-driven solutions. In the first wave of pitches: 📡 Luke Sawitsky from SeaAhead reverse-pitched Starboard Maritime Intelligence, which is redefining maritime domain awareness. Through a secure, web-based platform, Starboard Maritime Intelligence combines global AIS data, satellite imagery and scientific models to support the monitoring of national waters. By revealing high-risk vessel activity and detecting illegal fishing, the start-up empowers organizations to protect marine biodiversity and make impactful, data-driven decisions for ocean conservation. 🫧 Lavinia Carrese of Faros Accelerator presented Limenet’s pioneering approach to carbon dioxide removal. Limenet’s patented technology transforms carbon dioxide collected from the atmosphere or other sources into an aqueous solution of calcium bicarbonates, thereby storing carbon dioxide. Moreover, by dissolving this solution in sea water, Limenet increases ocean alkalinity, mitigating ocean acidification and increasing the ocean's natural carbon absorption capacity. 🌊 The third reverse pitch was presented by Susanne Wedin-Schildt from Ocean Community introducing Vessel X, whose innovative AI-powered unmanned surface vessels tackle coastal pollution with precision. Designed for marinas and coastal areas, these autonomous vessels efficiently clean surface waste and monitor water quality. Vessel X’s solution thereby addresses one of the most pressing environmental issues in marine ecosystems, combining advanced AI with real-time monitoring for sustainable water management. A special thank you to our members for these inspiring reverse pitches and for championing transformative ocean start-ups. These three examples showcase the powerful solutions ocean start-ups are delivering today, as 1000OS members work toward their mission of accelerating 1,000 ocean start-ups by 2030. #1000OceanStartups #OceanInnovation #OceanAction #SDG14 #OceanStartups #Startups #Innovation

On October 2nd, with our partners at the New England Aquarium, we simultaneously released our mCDR webinar and accompanying white paper. The webinar was hosted by the Angel Capital Association and featured speakers Luke Sawitsky, Principal at SeaAhead, and Dr. Jennifer Chow, Species Conservation Program Manager, at the Aquarium. The panel also showcased mCDR panelists Garrett Boudinot of Vycarb, Allan Adams of Aquatic Labs, and Carlos Muñoz Royo from atdepth MRV share their perspective on the growing space. Both materials aim to provide a foundation for investors to assess current and future opportunities in mCDR. We discuss all of the following key mCDR techniques and provide examples of startups currently tackling them: I. Coastal and ocean ecosystem recovery (blue carbon) II. Seaweed cultivation and sequestration III. Electrochemical CO2 removal (direct ocean capture) IV. Ocean alkalinity enhancement V. Ocean nutrient fertilization VI. Artificial upwelling Download "mCDR Removal: Investing in Science and Innovation to Build a Responsible Industry" here: https://lnkd.in/eW2z_wDE Watch the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/eDbcbWMS

A huge thank you to Charlie Sidoti and InnSure for putting on a excellent event and inviting me to join some very esteemed fellow presenters and panelists to explore the ways in which the innovation ecosystem can work with stakeholders in the insurance sector. As weather events become more extreme and frequent, sea levels rise, and we generally shift away from historical baselines, we need cross-sector collaboration to address the ways that climate change is impacting the industry and bring about new solutions and products or our changing times!
Thank you to everyone who joined our Climate Week Forum last week! Over the two-day event, we were thrilled to connect with so many climate-passionate individuals who are committed to the event’s two key themes: the energy transition and community resilience. The insightful and engaging discussions have reinforced the urgent need for innovation within the insurance industry and collaboration across sectors to address climate-related risk. We must continue working together to bridge the protection gap and build a more resilient future. #InnSureClimateWeekForum2024 #ClimateWeekNYC

SeaAhead and the New England Aquarium welcomed BlueSwell Cohort V to Boston last week, officially kicking off the program. The startups enjoyed tours of CIC Cambridge and the Aquarium, received valuable insight and advice from guest speakers, and delivered pitches to the BlueSwell community for the first time. We are excited to work with these founders as they transform their ocean-focused innovations into high-impact, scalable businesses. Learn more about Cohort V here: https://lnkd.in/g5FfWnMX Thank you to our friends and partners who helped make last week a success. Follow along with SeaAhead and the New England Aquarium to keep up with BlueSwell Cohort V over the next five months! Credit: Allegro Photography

Did you miss our mCDR Webinar last Tuesday? We recorded it! Want to read the the white paper that inspired the conversation? It's released. Please explore the links below and watch Luke Sawitsky and Dr. Jennifer Chow explain how bluetech investors, regulators, and novel technologies within the mCDR space can prevent the decline of our environment. Our white paper took an impressive amount of team effort to develop. Thank you to Luke Sawitsky for leading the charge, and thank you to the partners & co-authors he called out below. We encourage you to give it a read.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for our webinar last Wednesday showcasing SeaAhead's recent work in partnership with the New England Aquarium exploring marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR). We had a great turnout as Dr. Jennifer Chow and I highlighted opportunities for investment in science and innovation to unlock the potential of our oceans to sequester carbon while maintaining the critical ecosystem services that our blue planet provides. We also had a fantastic panel of mCDR entrepreneurs sharing their views on the state of the industry, how they assess future opportunities and needs, and what investors, scientists, and regulators can do to accelerate and de-risk mCDR. If you missed the webinar last week, don’t worry! You can watch a recording of the session here: https://lnkd.in/eS3NK5FF This webinar is a culmination of several months of work that went into the publication of the most recent Upswell white paper: “Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal: Investing in Science and Innovation to Build a Responsible Industry”. We were barely able to scratch the surface of the white paper's content in our webinar last week, and if you are interested in learning more about mCDR, MRV, carbon markets, and the opportunity for bluetech innovation and investment to move the needle on climate change we encourage you to download the paper from our website: https://lnkd.in/eNjcc-eC All of this would not have been possible without the assistance of too many people to mention here, but a special thanks to all of the experts we spoke with during our research process; my co-authors and most especially Dr. Jennifer Chow; our panelists (and BlueSwell Program alumni) Dr. Carlos Muñoz Royo from atdepth MRV, Dr. Garrett Boudinot from Vycarb, and Dr. Allan Adams from Aquatic Labs; the New England Aquarium; the Angel Capital Association, and the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
