Today, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed a rule to protect employees against heat stress. Five states already have heat stress standards, this would expand the reach. Federal Organizations, like the United States Department of Defense and their agencies, have had robust programs for decades. Every Friday this month we are sharing sustainable tips for your health and safety program in honor of #NationalSafetyMonth. This week, it's all about your corrective actions. Here's the synopsis: 1️⃣Implement a corrective action system that includes immediate, interim, and long term controls. 2️⃣Assess the risk of the identified hazard and the long term corrective action that eliminates, substitutes, or engineers the hazard out before relying on admin and PPE controls. 3️⃣Set an acceptable risk tolerance through a risk assessment for the hazard. 4️⃣Have regular steering committee meetings to discuss progress toward long term corrective action implementation. 5️⃣Keep up to date notes on the progress of implementing the controls, or reasons the control is not feasible to be implemented. 6️⃣Once controls have been implemented, check it’s sustainability 30 and 90 days after implementation. 7️⃣Adjust as necessary. June is #NationalSafetyMonth Every Friday, we will be dropping a gem to assist you in transforming your Safety Management System. We are focused on the SMS because if the system is thriving, people and their environment will be as well. Today's tip is to connect behavior and expectations with a meaningful "why". Principal Consultant, @Subena Colligan, explains. The "why" behind behaviors can make a difference. Often times we hear "because it's the law" or "it's the right thing to do". While those are true statements, sometimes it doesn't motivate people to behave in excess of what they are held accountable to. Instead of a generic "What's your why", try asking "What motivates you to support this initiative?" Then ask "What are your barriers to success?" These two questions can unlock the why and help you to discover challenges that are holding people back. P.S. if there are no barriers to success you may have to dig, often times there are schedules, budgets, personnel, or time commitments that make engaging in the right thing to do an obstacle. P.S.S. During a recent management system audit, the client wanted to understand why we needed to interview the Plant Manager while also caring about the regulatory compliance on the manufacturing floor. Our consultant EHS Transformation Consultants explained that the leadership commitment must be assessed while also verifying hazard identification, assessment, prevention, and control as necessary. Hey y'all! Earlier this week, I posted that EHS Transformation Consultants had the opportunity to pitch in front of industry giants like Delta Air Lines Cox Communications UPS and Norfolk Southern. We ROCKED the presentation 🎇 There was only one winner but standing in a room of giants, Health and Safety had a voice. We didn't win the check, but here is what we learned: 1️⃣ These companies have leaders that understand and empathize with the dynamics that make health and safety a hurdle 2️⃣ We have an opportunity to introduce more technology into small business practices to improve the lives of others 3️⃣ Learning the motivations of your audience, and not what you want them to know, can make them more interested in what you want them to know 4️⃣ Winning isn't everything. Walking away, there were stronger relationships built between the other small businesses presenting and an exposure to our services by the industries we presented to P.S. We agreed that the small business that won would take the group out to eat for lunch to continue networking, learning about our business challenges, and building a community (talk about a real win).
