The world's leading outlet for scientific news, commentary, and cutting-edge research.
About us
Founded in 1880 on $10,000 of seed money from the American inventor Thomas Edison, Science has grown to become the world's leading outlet for scientific news, commentary, and cutting-edge research, with the largest paid circulation of any peer-reviewed general-science journal. Through its print and online incarnations, Science reaches an estimated worldwide readership of more than one million. In content, too, the journal is truly international in scope; some 35 to 40 percent of the corresponding authors on its papers are based outside the United States. Its articles consistently rank among world's most cited research.

Identifying alternatives to #PFAS ("forever chemicals") requires weighing trade-offs and uncertainties, say Mohamed Ateia Ibrahim and Martin Scheringer in a new Science Magazine Perspective. "For alternatives to PFAS, setting realistic expectations is important," they write. "Not all substitutes may immediately match the performance of well-established chemicals that have been optimized over decades of use. However, these differences do not outweigh the enormity of risks posed by PFAS and the large cost of remediating widespread contamination. Transitioning away from PFAS requires some trade-offs, at least temporarily, until alternative solutions can be further refined." Read the Perspective in Science here: https://lnkd.in/esfnw2s4

In the new book On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service, Tony Fauci reflects on a remarkable career. “When Tony Fauci—few outside his family refer to the physician as ‘Anthony’—was summoned to the White House in the late 1980s by then vice president George H. W. Bush, a colleague offered a word of warning: ‘Some people might fall into the trap of never wanting to disappoint a powerful figure, and so they slant their advice toward pleasing rather than informing. Don’t fall into that trap.’ The advice served him well over the decades that followed as he helped shape US public health policy as the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “In his new memoir … Fauci offers readers an insider’s perspective on the US government’s response to the pathogens that threatened humanity during his tenure, from Ebola to anthrax to COVID-19, with a particular emphasis on his crucial work on HIV/AIDS.” Read more in a new #ScienceBooks Review: https://scim.ag/7O1
