We envision a world where creativity inspires a compassionate and vibrant community.
About us
The Mexican Heritage Plaza (MHP) is a uniquely designed cultural facility located in the Mayfair neighborhood of east San Jose, a predominantly Mexican American neighborhood since the mid-20th Century. The MHP was built by the City of San Jose in 1999 on the site of one of the first grocery store boycotts for farm workers’ rights organized by César Chavez in the 1960s. Guided by an extensive community planning process designed to re-imagine the future of the Mexican Heritage Plaza in East San Jose, the School of Arts and Culture at MHP was created in 2011. The School envisions a world where creativity inspires compassion and vibrant communities. Our mission is to catalyze creativity and empower community. The School offers after-school and summer sessions in visual and performing arts, and it provides a multicultural and intercultural venue for community programs that embrace all cultures while exploring the artistic traditions, cultural history, and contemporary creative expression of Mexican arts. In addition, the School is the home of the Multicultural Arts Leadership Institute, which is a leadership program for people of color engaged in the arts and cultural community.

East San José just got a lot more vibrant! Edgar Ochoa has completed his latest mural, “Recuerdos del Este.” (Memories of the East). “Recuerdos del Este” comes alive with the community at 34th street and Alum Rock Avenue. It features imagery directly correlated to Edgar's past and present memories of East San Jose. Within the mural there are commemorations to the Mural de La Raza and El Chaparral which Edgar grew up admiring during his childhood. You can also see an Aztec dancer and temple, plants that are native to Northern America, and iconic figures such as community leader Chava Bustamante. Edgar also included his depictions of the Virgin Mary, a Dia de los Muertos sugar skull, and a Sacred Heart, representing traditional elements of Mexican artistry, and an homage to Sacred Heart Community Service. Lastly, the mural showcases significant landmarks such as the San Jose Flea Market, and the Mexican Heritage Plaza where Edgar now holds a position as Director of Community Engagement. Great job, Edgar! Your contributions continue to enrich East San José! Come see "Recuerdos del Este" on view now! #EastSanJoseé #Mural #MexicanHeritagePlaza #SchoolofArtsandCulture Local Color Latino Business Foundation Silicon Valley San Jose Sharks
