A multi-discipline R&D center solving the Nation's most challenging environmental and security problems.

About us

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multidiscipline research and development center, where accomplished scientists and engineers solve the Nation’s most challenging environmental and security problems. With a staff of more than 1,100 dedicated and safety-focused professionals, SRNL protects the nation by applying science to global security, the environment and the energy economy. The laboratory uses its unique scientific and engineering expertise to develop and deploy practical solutions with high returns on investment for the Nation. SRNL innovations include advances in energy storage technology, materials science, and nuclear non-proliferation. The laboratory also provides field-proven expertise for environmental cleanup and managing the Nation’s nuclear materials. SRNL conducts research in specialized laboratories for the safe study and handling of radioactive materials, laboratories for ultra-sensitive measurement and analysis of radioactive materials, internationally accredited analytical laboratories, and the only radiological crime investigation laboratory in the U.S. Working with an established network of industry, academic, and public partners, SRNL has advanced scientific discovery and commercial innovation. SRNL also fuels the Nation’s economy by licensing its patented technologies to private companies for commercialization. Whether it is optimizing chemical processes to safely dispose of legacy nuclear waste, collaborating with partners on grid security or using its expertise in nuclear materials science to make the world safer, SRNL works every day to secure the nation’s future.

Our 2024 interns (from left) Elena Swenson, Joshua Carson and Austin Mason recently had the opportunity to help renew L&A's support for the Savannah River Site Museum. The museum works to educate people on the important role the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) played during the Cold War. We're proud to support DOE's activities at SRS and the Savannah River National Laboratory. You can learn more about what we do at SRS, and at DOE sites across the country, at www.la-inc.com!

  • The U.S Department of Energy’s Grid Modernization Initiative unveiled its comprehensive strategy for future-proofing our power grid! The GMI’s strategic goals will be supported by the Grid Modernization Lab Consortium (GMLC), which brings together 14 national laboratories (including SRNL), through collaborative research, development and demonstration projects.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Grid Modernization Initiative has announced its strategy for investing in innovative new technologies to modernize today’s power grid while ensuring it remains secure and sustainable. Drawing from the Administration’s goals and power system objectives, the GMI’s updated strategy defines six pillars to guide its work: 1) Devices and Integrated Systems; 2) Operations 3) Planning; 4) Markets, Policies, and Regulations; 5) Resilient and Secure Systems; and 6) Flexible Generation and Load. The future modernized grid will need to balance a variety of key priorities that are not all perfectly aligned with each other. This document establishes a clear and actionable grid modernization strategy for DOE and the national labs to align these priorities in a secure and efficient manner.     Learn more and read the strategy here: https://lnkd.in/g3SpwXHv

  • Let's take a moment to shine the volunteer spotlight on two incredible SRNL employees who are making a difference in the Central Savannah River Area. Give it up for Megan Hoover and Louis M. (McNamara)! Megan is a computational materials scientist who uses quantum mechanics to study material by submitting simulations to our high-performance computer at SRNL. She also is a co-chair of SRNL’s annual American Heart Association (AHA) campaign. When she’s not practicing yoga or reading, she seizes every opportunity she can to help others. Megan is champion for the AHA and an advocate for heart disease research as it is the “number one killer” in the Central Savannah River Area. Since 2014, there has been $47.2 million raised to fund heart health research in the CSRA, with $10.6 million going toward research last year. Louis is a scientist for the Nuclear Detection and Forensics group at SRNL. When he’s not characterizing material and studying reactions of uranium hexafluoride, he’s looking for opportunities to volunteer with Team SRNL. Louis often volunteers at local schools during the school year and at local STEM festivals. He is passionate about getting children excited about science and he enjoys introducing them to careers in STEM. Way to go Megan and Louis!  Through excellence in community service, we lead by an example of service to our communities where we work, play and raise our families.

  • Get ready for this year’s SRNL Research SLAM, where science meets showtime! We've got eight young and brilliant SRNL researchers each ready to take the stage with easy-to-understand, three-minute presentations about their research and why it’s important. They’re ready to break it down for all the non-science folks out there - and trust us, it will be a fun time! This year, the event is open to the community to join in on the fun and learn about the amazing science SRNL does and why it's so important. A panel of judges will choose the first and second place awards, but the audience will choose a third people’s choice award. And here's the best part: it’s free! Register to attend this year’s SRNL Research SLAM at https://lnkd.in/dzt5YcNu. Don’t wait! Registration is open to the first 200 registrants.
