When buildings and landscapes are designed together, sometimes alchemy happens. In this article for Docomomo US, James Miner and Ian Dickenson explore the radical fusion of building and landscape in three of Hideo Sasaki's early corporate campuses. Give it a read and enjoy the glorious original photos by Ezra Stoller/Esto!
I really enjoyed the opportunity to research and write about three of Hideo Sasaki's mid-century corporate campus projects, which were recently featured in Docomomo. The key takeaway here is how great design emerges when design egos are set aside (which is extremely rare, unfortunately) and true collaboration occurs between architects and landscape architects! Thanks to Ian Dickenson for both encouraging and helping me to write this, and for introducing me to Elizabeth Waytkus at Docomomo. I'm also thankful to Rae Pozdro for helping to uncover some of the amazing imagery of these landmark projects! https://lnkd.in/eP7K2fxv

Capitol campuses are the most fundamental physical spaces of our democracy: they cross generations and outlive design trends and political movements. But many of them feel frozen in time. As society changes, shouldn't our civic spaces evolve accordingly? Josh Brooks says, "Capitols present an opportunity to rethink how these landscapes and districts integrate into the surrounding city fabric." Josh reflects on Sasaki's work on capitol campuses and shares ideas of how they serve as mediums for modern life. Learn more! https://lnkd.in/egWNCRbJ #capitalidea

"There's never a dull moment in landscape architecture," says Philip Dugdale. In this recent profile in World Landscape Architecture, Philip tells us about becoming smitten with the public realm, designing with his eyes closed, and why he chose landscape architecture over becoming a postman. https://lnkd.in/eKiheWKS

Sasaki's new interdisciplinary research building at Tecnológico de Monterrey is making steady progress! Born of our 2014 Urban Regeneration Plan, the Expedition building will house the Tec's research institutes and external partners, and is on track to be completed at the end of summer 2024. The 220k-sf trapezoidal volume has an engaging base, with publicly accessible ground and second levels, a transparent middle to that follows the form of the building circulation, and an overhanging top that is articulated according to its cardinal orientation to shade occupants and spaces behind it. In this site visit, we see facade glazing installed on most floors, aluminum skin on three sides, and installation of volcanic stone siding and fiber cement on the plinth. https://lnkd.in/eBTt2ZAp #sasakibuilds
