Sustainability is integral to us at #Devro and we are continually reducing our environmental impact to benefit our business, our communities, and future generations. The recent completion of an integrated waste heat recovery system has successfully resulted in a 12,180 tonnes reduction in steam consumption which has provided a carbon reduction of 1,107 tCO2e. Overall objective The primary objective of this project was to reduce the site heat/ steam load resulting in a reduction on utility gas consumption and carbon emissions to support Devro’s global sustainability targets. With the installation of the heat recovery systems at the Moodiesburn manufacturing site, waste heat exhausted from the drying process is recovered and used to replace steam energy to heat the inlet air, resulting in a significant reduction on gas utility consumption. Implementation The project was delivered within the approved budget. The project has delivered significant savings during the first year of operation. • 12,180 tonnes of steam reduction have been achieved • Carbon reduction has been evaluated at 1,107 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. The Waste Heat Recovery system is fully operational and is now exceeding performance expectations. Health & Safety The project was completed with zero safety incidents. Health & Safety was a crucial factor when selecting contractors and excellent supervision was provided by the Moodiesburn Engineering and Maintenance teams. Lessons Learned: There are two positives we have taken from this project: • Engagement with an excellent Subject Matter Expert who have extensive experience in decarbonisation engineering solutions, and honest communication and collaboration between all contractors were essential for the success of the project. • Extensive measurement and collection of data was critical to ensure the correct system design considerations were implemented.
