Creating human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots

About us

Sanctuary is on a mission to create the world’s first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots that will help us work more safely, efficiently, and sustainably. And in the not-too-distant future, help us explore, settle, and prosper in outer space. Members of the Sanctuary team founded D-Wave (a pioneer in the quantum computing industry), Kindred (first use of reinforcement learning in a production robot), and the Creative Destruction Lab (pioneered a revolutionary method for the commercialization of science for the betterment of humankind). The team has experience launching market-defining innovations rooted in previously unsolved and deep scientific problems.

Being able to grasp, lift, and place objects requires not only dexterous hands and fingers, but also an understanding of how to apply the exact amount of force needed. Sanctuary AI technology allows Phoenix robots to interact with our world in the same ways that we need to in order to do work. “The fact is, robot legs are mechanically and electronically very complex. They don’t move very fast. They’re prone to making the robot unstable. They’re also not very power-efficient compared to wheels.” Hans Peter Brøndmo echoing our design experience and customer feedback when building Phoenix  in an insightful article in WIRED. The article discusses the national imperative for investment in robotics technologies. As population numbers continue to shrink, we must turn to technology to care for our elderly, maintain our infrastructure, and ensure our current way of life. South Korea’s birth rate is so low that it could result in a 96% reduction in the country’s overall population within just three generations. In an interview with Herbert Ong, Geordie Rose highlights “the most important existential threat to human flourishing in the future” – population depletion. With fewer people to perform essential tasks, we need technology which takes the brunt of the labor challenge off people and puts it on machines to overcome this threat. “This isn’t speculation; it’s projection”, states Geordie. With an increasingly aging and shrinking global population, there simply won’t be enough people to allow our current way of life to continue flourishing, and this is only going to worsen over time. We believe general-purpose humanoid robots are a critical part of our future. Learn more in this insightful interview: https://lnkd.in/gaygfBGu  #AI #innovation

In May we announced our collaboration with Microsoft. We are working with them to bolster AI research and development, while also leveraging Microsoft’s Azure cloud resources for our AI workloads. Collaborations like this play a key role in our progress toward "Large Behavior Models" (LBMs) that ground AI in the physical world by enabling systems to understand and learn from real-world experience. The collaboration, described as ‘stunning’ by Brighter With Herbert, was also featured in TechCrunch, where author Brian Heater said, “Such a partnership deepens Microsoft’s commitment to AI development and delivers a partner who can design hardware to those specifications. Sanctuary has been operating in the space for some time now, and recently scored a pilot partnership with Magna, which will bring the latest version of Phoenix to car plants.” The launch was covered by several news outlets such as TechCrunch, Canadian Manufacturing, Interesting Engineering, Yahoo Finance, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and The Economist. I'm going to be speaking about a personal project I've been working on. It's at the intersection of AI, games, and quantum computing. Its objective is to develop the first demonstration of a realm of quantum supremacy that can be made useful. #whydoidothistomyself

Earlier this year we launched our Phoenix™ Gen 7 robots, unveiled less than 12 months after we announced Phoenix Gen 6. The latest generation of Phoenix and its AI control system, Carbon™, draw even closer to that of a person, with wide ranging improvements to both the hardware and AI software. The time it takes for new tasks to be automated has gone from weeks to less than 24 hours, marking a major milestone in task automation speed and autonomous system capability. “It’s incredible to see the progress that has been made in just 11 months,” said Geordie Rose, CEO and Co-Founder of Sanctuary AI. “With Generation 7, we have a system that we believe is the most closely analogous to a person of any available. We see this as not only the cornerstone of general purpose AI robotics but a critical step on the path to artificial general intelligence, and we’re thrilled to be leading the charge on it. This all adds up to being able to capture increasing quantities of higher quality, higher fidelity human behavioral data, which in turn will expedite the development of foundational AI models and customer deployments.” The launch was covered by multitudes of journalists such as Brian Heater, Chris Middleton, Alex Riehl and BNN Bloomberg. Herbert Ong also did a fantastic video piece on his podcast Brighter with Herbert. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gkWKrqWg #AI #Robotics

You will often see robot demo videos marked (or occasionally called out for not being marked…) as 'teleoperated' rather than autonomous. It's a term many in the industry understand, and sometimes we take for granted that everyone else will too. So, I wanted to explain a little more for those new to the industry about what teleoperation is and why we need it. Teleoperation is a vital part of our AI training process. It’s basically a way for our robot pilots to 'show' the AI control system how a person would carry out a task. Picture this: using a teleoperation rig that includes a VR headset and haptic feedback gloves, our pilots perform demonstrations of specific tasks. The AI then uses this behavioral, touch, and visual data to learn how a person would carry out a task. Imagine learning to play tennis, but with Serena Williams in a little suit that could move your body to show you how to serve at 206 km/h. This is how we build our industry’s equivalent of Large Language Models, allowing AI systems to act autonomously. We call these “Large Behavior Models.” Without a person doing this first through the robot, we wouldn’t be able to collect all the data needed for a robot to interact with and manipulate objects in a changeable environment. In essence, teleoperation is like a puppeteer teaching a marionette to one day cut the strings and become a real boy… or in our case a robot capable of performing useful work.

Come check it out -- a very interesting thing I've been working on at the intersection of quantum computing, reinforcement learning, and games. Possibly the first time you will ever have seen alphazero combined with an actual real life quantum computer!
