  • New programs at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office are boosting employee wellness and enhancing community safety. Under Sheriff Christina Corpus’ leadership, and through these wrap-around initiatives that improve both the mental and physical health of employees, the Sheriff’s Office team is becoming more resilient. “Public safety and employee wellness go hand-in-hand. This is personal to me, because I’ve been in the shoes of our employees who are trying to balance a demanding career and a family life at the same time. I know what it’s like to feel undervalued for the sacrifices you make, which is why I am steadfast in my commitment to enhancing the work environment for our employees,” said Sheriff Corpus. This unprecedented way of helping employees, especially in the law enforcement sector, is setting a new standard for agencies across the country, demonstrating the profound impact that wellness can have on public safety. Yesterday, in a groundbreaking move to support law enforcement professionals and their families, Sheriff Christina Corpus held a press conference to announce the establishment of the first-ever child daycare center tailored exclusively for San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office employees. Inspired by her own experiences as a working mom, Sheriff Corpus is taking this transformative step toward reshaping workplace culture in law enforcement, improving retention, and attracting top-tier talent. “Our sworn and professional staff face the same pressures of balancing work and family that many do, but with the added complexity of a demanding and often unpredictable profession. By supporting the well-being of our law enforcement families, this initiative also strengthens the safety and security of the communities we serve,” said Sheriff Corpus. This new facility will offer accessible, affordable, and high-quality childcare for children of Sheriff’s Office employees, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Northern California. The daycare center will offer extended operating hours to ensure care is available to parents working non-traditional shifts. This leading-edge step also aims to save taxpayers money. By retaining employees, the Sheriff’s Office looks to reduce expenses related to recruiting, hiring and training, as well as overtime costs. The center also addresses the gender gap in law enforcement. As an agency who has taken the 30x30 Initiative Pledge, aiming to have 30% of its workforce be made up of women by the year 2030, the creation of this daycare center offers a concrete solution to help women pursue, advance, and succeed in the law enforcement profession. The Sheriff’s Office has already secured a leased space for the daycare center in North Fair Oaks. During the October 8 Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board will consider approving a contract allowing for construction to start. With the Board’s support and direct investment in Sheriff’s Office employees, the much-needed center could open as early as the summer of 2025. By prioritizing employee and family needs, Sheriff Corpus is sending a strong message: law enforcement is a career for everyone. • At the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of our communities by providing the highest quality of law enforcement services. Achieving this goal starts with preparedness and seeking out the most advanced and comprehensive training available. Last week, we brought in specialized trainers to prepare our personnel for a wide range of emergencies. Combining detailed instruction with practical, hands-on scenarios, the program emphasized critical response tactics, incident management, and effective communication under pressure. The dynamic drills exposed our front-line personnel to a diverse range of critical incidents - all with the goal of sharpening our response strategies and saving lives. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants noting how the training enhanced their readiness and ability to protect the community. #training #professionaldevelopment #preparedness

  • Reducing recidivism and creating a path forward for incarcerated persons is a key focus area for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Through innovative programs, including the state-of-the-art Culinary Arts, Baking and Hospitality program, the Sheriff’s Office aims to do just that. The culinary program, a long-standing partnership with JobTrain, Inc., provides men and women at the Maple Street Correctional Center with an incredibly unique opportunity to learn new skills, be exposed to a professional culinary environment within the facility, and be trained by a Chef. To demonstrate the value of the program, participants recently put their knowledge and skills to the test by preparing a meal for the Sheriff, her Executive Team and members of the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC). The three-course meal was beautifully and meticulously prepared, and it was a joy to see the group work together as a team. Between the presentation, taste and experience – we give it a Sheriff’s Office Michelin star! ⭐ The culinary program is one of many programs offered in our correctional facilities designed to give real-world experience to those in custody. Upon release, program participants will be able to use the skills they learned, combined with their personal passions, to fulfill their dreams and future careers.
