Congratulations to SFEI ecologists Sacha Heath and Kelly Iknayan who recently presented at an international conference hosted by the Urban Biodiversity and Design International Network (URBIO) in Columbia, Missouri! Sacha presented on projects from SFEI's Urban Nature team including Next Generation Urban Greening project, Making Nature's City Toolkit, Ecology for Health, multiple historical ecology projects, and recent engagement work with communities and Tribes. Researchers from all over the world attended this hybrid conference to exchange ideas, make connections, and learn about urban biodiversity research from around the globe. Bridging science and effective stewardship
About us
The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI-ASC) is one of California’s premier environmental science organizations. Our mission: provide scientific support and tools for planning, designing, and decision-making. We conduct independent research to assess and improve the health of the waters, wetlands, wildlife and landscapes of San Francisco Bay, California, and beyond. Our skilled scientists and technology experts provide data and tools that empower government, community, and industry to implement cost-effective solutions for complex environmental challenges. We have three primary programs – Clean Water, Resilient Landscapes, and Environmental Informatics – that together bridge the divide between decline and adaptation. We welcome your review! https://g.page/r/CQA8RsH3DzqkEB0/review

Staff from SFEI’s Resilient Landscapes Program Helen Casendino and Lauren Stoneburner held a busy outreach session with Canopy at the Mountain View Farmers Market to gather input on a Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan for the City of Mountain View. Over 200 people stopped by to learn more about the plan development and share what they want to see prioritized in the document and in the city. SFEI is leading the development of the Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan, and is supporting and facilitating community engagement in partnership with the City of Mountain View. We will continue to hold events and workshops with community members throughout the summer and fall. Find the full schedule of events at this link: https://lnkd.in/gbQjupzG

Resilient Landscapes is hard at work this summer! From community engagement for Mountain View's Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan to studying landscape change in Suisun Marsh and developing ecological design guidance to create a biodiversity corridor along SF's Sunset Boulevard, the Resilient Landscape team is working to increase biodiversity across the Bay Area. Visit https://www.sfei.org/rl to learn more about SFEI's many ongoing projects! SFEI is excited to welcome Emma Sevier to the Resilient Landscapes Program! Emma will work with our team monitoring the San Francisco Estuary's baylands to make sure they have enough sediment to keep up with sea level rise. You can find more about our team's work on Sediment Solutions here: https://lnkd.in/gnXJZmyQ

Presentations from the 2024 State of the Estuary conference from Resilient Landscape scientists Jeremy Lowe and Scott Dusterhoff were highlighted in the recent issue of Knee Deep Times. The story titled, "Sizing Up Progress on Nature-Based Infrastructure" discusses the work Jeremy is doing to help develop a multi-objective solution for State Route 37 in the North Bay and the work Scott is doing to support increased sediment delivery to baylands to help them survive sea-level rise. https://lnkd.in/gm2wd7we

Check out the latest map of the Bay Area's shore habitats! The Baylands Habitat Map relies on cutting-edge automated techniques to classify the region’s unique and valuable ecosystems. Funded by the U.S. EPA, it is the first complete map of Bay wetland and aquatic habitats since 2009, and it allows us to see these habitats in greater detail and accuracy than ever before. The image below is a side-by-side comparison of Wildcat Marsh (Richmond, CA) aerial imagery and the corresponding habitat map. The Baylands Habitat Map is now helping scientists, planners, and policy-makers track habitat changes and analyze how ecosystems respond to climate change, urbanization, restoration, and more. Suisun Marsh is the largest brackish marsh in the western United States. SFEI is currently working on a body of science and planning tools to understand past, present, and potential future changes to the Marsh’s ecological patterns, processes, and functions. 🌱 New project alert! 🌱 SFEI’s Resilient Landscapes program is excited to announce the start of a new project this summer! Healthy Watersheds & Thriving Cities is a 4-year, $3.5 Million effort in Santa Clara County funded by the US EPA’s Water Quality Improvement Fund (WQIF). SFEI will work closely with local partners, communities, and Tribes to develop a landscape-scale watershed approach to identify opportunities for collaborative urban greening projects that provide multiple benefits to humans and wildlife. This approach will also inform the design of several on-the-ground implementation projects within Santa Clara County. SFEI will build upon previously successful WQIF projects and ongoing efforts in the Santa Clara Valley by a myriad of partners which include: BluePoint Planning, Climate Resilient Communities, City of Santa Clara, City of San José, Our City Forest, Santa Clara County Climate Collaborative, Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program, Save The Bay, South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition, and the Tamien Nation. We look forward to working with and supporting our partners on this project over the next four years!
