⭐𝑺𝑨𝑨𝑯𝑱 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕⭐ We are excited to announce that this year's recipient of the Corazon de Oro Award is Carmen Tafolla, award-winning poet and children’s author, and named State Poet Laureate of Texas in 2015. A native of San Antonio’s West Side, Carmen is the definition of this year's gala theme, Voces de San Antonio, bringing to life Hispanic culture through her poetry, short stories, children's books and literature work. Launched in 2014, SAAHJ’s Corazón de Oro Award honors an individual whose work and leadership reflects positively on the U.S. Latino experience and/or who explores Latino perspectives. The Corazón de Oro Award was conceived as an award for San Antonians (and potentially non-San Antonians) who have made a national impact on the U.S. Latino community philanthropically, politically, culturally, educationally, or socially. Recipients make significant financial or social contributions that influence U.S. Latinos. Recipients each have “un corazón de oro,” referring to the Mexican or Spanish-language phrase, someone with a heart of gold. Congratulations, Carmen! We can’t wait to celebrate you at our SAAHJ scholarship gala on Saturday, Aug. 10! She didn't know it at the time, but an embarrassing after school Spanish lesson in 4th grade changed Melanie Mendez Gonzales' life forever. Her inability to translate the Spanish word “qué” would later inspire a blog and award-winning digital media empire that continues to thrive here in San Antonio. She's spoken several times at SXSW, she hosts a talk show on KLRN Public Television and counts Walmart, Chevrolet and Disneyland Resort among her many corporate partners. Next month, Melanie and I will emcee the 26th annual San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists Scholarship Gala at the Grand Hyatt. Find out more at sahispanicjournalists.com.
