The Salvadori Center ~ bringing math, science, and the arts to life!
About us
All too often we hear students ask, “Why do I need to know this?” They question the relevance of math and science to their lives and their futures. Salvadori’s innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based programs give students the tools they need to answer this question for themselves. The Salvadori Center shows students the relevance of math and science using the buildings, bridges, landmarks, and parks in their local communities. Through collaborative, hands-on, project-based learning, and a scientific method of discovery, students see the math and science within the classrooms they enter, the bridges they cross, the parks they play in, and the buildings they see every day.

We have a really dedicated group of professionals that support career connections for students in #STEAM!
Today, we highlight Dominic Ponce de Leon, Director of Business Development at Shawmut Design and Construction, and member of Salvadori’s Emerging Leader Advisory Board. 😀 Dominic has been supportive in building connections that provide students with meaningful interactions and opportunities to further their interest in built environment careers. 🌟 This year, Dominic connected with key individuals to bring Salvadori into new schools. He also facilitated collaborations with The City College of New York graduates to create field trip opportunities to the campus and bolster our career preparedness programs through access to CCNY’s School of Architecture. 🌟 Recently, Dominic led the charge in planning a Career Day at PS 368M and organized a volunteer team for our Annual Student Design Charrette. 🌟 Salvadori is incredibly grateful for Dominic's dedication and support. His commitment to our mission has made a great impact on our students and programs. Thank you, Dominic, for all that you do! 😊🌟

For #InternationalWomensEngineeringDay we're excited to highlight Elizabeth Leslie! 😃 Beth graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Civic Engineering. She began her professional career as a Project Engineer for the The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. Leveraging her expertise, she is now a Vice President of Construction at Boston Properties (BXP) and member of Salvadori’s board. 🌟 As VP of Construction, Beth has worked on a wide breadth of construction projects, including the 804 Carnegie Center NRG build-to-suit building in Princeton, NJ, and the Apple/General Motors Building Plaza redevelopment project. Overseeing a team of seven construction managers, Beth is currently working on demolition and redevelopment of the MTA site on Madison Avenue as well as exploring several redevelopment opportunities at Carnegie Center in Princeton, NJ. 🌟 Beth plays an essential role in the industry of engineering, and supporting youth throughout their STEAM education. Recently, she supported Salvadori students during our Annual Design Charrette. 🌟 Her leadership is inspiring and makes a positive impact. 🌟

For #InternationalWomenEngineeringDay, we're highlighting Stavroula Doukakis, Mechanical Engineer at WSP. 😃🌟 From a young age, Stavroula had an interest in hands-on activities and crafts. She excelled in art classes and had a strong interest in math and science. She often made frequent visits to Radio Shack and sought after soldering projects in middle school. These initiatives foreshadowed her future in engineering. 🌟 Stavroula took her first engineering course in high school, where she was the only female in the class. She received a lot of encouragement from her teacher, Mr. Amato and despite being teased from her classmates, her determination only grew stronger. 🌟 Later in her education Stavroula earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. While there, she joined the Theta Phi Alpha (ΘΦΑ) sorority; which enabled her to find a supportive community of like-minded women. 🌟 As a Mechanical Engineer, Stavroula is intentional in connecting with other women in the field and using her experience to give back to the student community. Recently, she volunteered in speaking to 3rd to 5th grade students from William Lynch School in Harlem about the engineering industry. 🌟 Overall, Stavroula is proud to be an engineer and wants to encourage more women to enter the field! 🌟

For #InternationalWomensEngineeringDay we're excited to highlight Darlene Mae Ortillo, PE, Structural Engineer at STV! 😃 Darlene holds a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering from University College Dublin and a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. 🌟 As a Structural Engineer at STV, Darlene’s role involves drawing, calculating, designing, and constructing, while often extensively coordinating projects with clients, architects, and fellow engineers. Prior to working at STV, Darlene worked as Structural Engineer for Clarke Engineering Services, PC and DBFL Consulting Engineers Ltd. Her role within these positions included residential and commercial projects involving design, analysis, and drafting.🌟 Alongside her role in engineering, Darlene provides mentorship to future generations. She recently mentored and worked alongside students during our Annual Design Charrette. 🌟 Overall, Darlene's leadership in the industry will continue to create more advancement within engineering, and opportunity for students. 🌟 #WomenInEngineering #StructuralEngineering #WomenLeaders #STEAMSuccess #STEMSuccess #WomeninSTEAM

Career Day at PS 368: The William Lynch School was a success! 😁 STEAM professionals from WSP, STUDIOS Architecture, and Shawmut Design and Construction spoke with 3rd to 5th grade students about their career journeys and opportunities. Thank you Thalia Navedo, Dominic Ponce de Leon, Stavroula Doukakis, Iris Valle, Joseph Boyle, Ata Gün Aksu, and Claire Navin for your insightful presentations and for taking the time to support and inspire students in their STEAM education. We greatly appreciate all of you. ❤️
One last volunteer day to round out the school year with Salvadori Center! Such a fun day spent along with STUDIOS Architecture and WSP in the U.S. presenting to elementary school students about the relationships between architects, engineers and construction managers and how teamwork quite literally makes the dream work! One of the best parts of volunteering, aside from engaging with the young scholars, is meeting folks from the ACE industry through our partnership with Salvadori. Thank you Malika Khalsa to inviting us back to present, we’re always happy to connect with students! #ShawmutProud

A heightened perspective is the key to success! 🌟 During our #SalvadoriFieldTrip to One World Observatory, 5th grade Salvadori students from P.S. 368 in Harlem were able to see the built environment from a birds-eye view with Educators Juliana and Daniel! In the classroom, students learn about skyscrapers and the STEAM concepts that make them stand. During the field trip, students completed a skyscraper scavenger hunt activity that allowed them to connect the trip to the lessons from in the classroom. Students were able to see NYC in a way that grew their passion for STEAM.❤️ To learn more about our field trip opportunities, email us at [email protected] #fieldtripfun #oneworldobservatory #youngSTEAMleaders #learningadventure #projectbasedlearning #studentcollaboration #salvadoristudentsuccess #STEMeducation #STEAMeducation
