U.S. Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Angie Craig for Congress (D-Minn.) will introduce a bill this week addressing the “rising elder abuse of LGBTQI individuals.” The Elder Pride Protection Act of 2024 would establish a task force through the Justice Department, tasked with studying “the increased incidence of elder abuse” targeting #LGBTQ individuals, developing best practices for a national approach and for state and local authorities to address these crimes, creating and distributing educational materials to raise awareness, and coordinating “the response of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.” “SAGE is proud to support the Elder Pride Protection Act of 2024,” said Aaron Tax, managing director of government affairs and policy advocacy for SAGE, a national advocacy and services organization for LGBTQ elders. 💙🌈#LGBTQAging #WeRefusetoBeInvisible #ElderPrideProtectionAct “LGBTQ elders deserve to age without fear of elder abuse,” Tax added. “We applaud Rep. Gottheimer for championing the establishment of this important task force, which we hope will improve the lives of LGBTQ older people.” Read more about The Elder Pride Protection Act here: https://loom.ly/MqP8ZUU

AARP released their latest Dignity 2024 survey, which increases our understanding of the lived experience of LGBTQ adults age 45-plus in the areas of health care access, caregiving, isolation, and relationships. It was found that four out of five older LGBTQ adults, or ~78%, are concerned about having enough social support as they get older. Women and Black respondents, along with those who have a disability, were more likely to say they are “extremely” or “very” concerned about a lack of social support in the future. The survey also found that half of #LGBTQ older adults already feel socially isolated at times, which can have a profound impact on a person’s mental and physical health, research shows. The feelings are highest among transgender and nonbinary adults, with 63 percent reporting they often or sometimes feel isolated from others. #WeRefusetoBeInvisible #LGBTQAging Check out additional survey findings here: https://loom.ly/l5H7cMc
